Same. You really never know what is going to happen. I would drive down straight away and claim my prize, not saying a darn word to anyone about it. Once it is in my name I would drive to the wealth management office the next town over and get some advice and then to my lawyer's to draw up a will.

Depending on how big the JP is personally I wouldn't tell another living soul to begin with. I think it would be neat just to see how long it takes for people to find out, if they find out at all.... [ More ]

Hi Groppo, Have you ever heard of Charging order protection? This could be a route to protect your assets.

I think that this could be one step away from moving your money offshore.

It might protect your Trusts, LLCs, and Family Limited Protection.

I'm thinking that in whatever state you reside, you'll probably need to make the courts liable, in case anything happens to you, or make the state liable, in case of anything like that.

But HOW do you go about that? (In a will sort of thing?)

From what was shown on a few of those shows you wouldn't have to be on one to get hounded.

One jackpot winner mentioned getting two and three bags of mail a day simply addressed;

He contacted the post office asking if he could refuse it and they said if they know where you are they have to deliver it.

Coin Toss, I will first experience the life of a lottery winner and then decide if I want to be on one of those shows. I will get some real life training with handling family and friends. Like MikeinTexas said, It is those and the ones in business suits who will defraud you of your money.

I have read that you can tell a Conman from how desperate they look and how they need to move on after robbing you. Pay attention to the details when you do business with anyone. Use your sixth sense.

That's a reasonable compromise and one every state should adopt. It would satisfy the need for transparency and give the winners time to institute some security measures . As far as security concerns, history shows a winner has more to fear from their family and friends than they do strangers and more chance of being robbed from men in suits and ties than those in ski masks and brandishing a pistol. Besides saying, NO . There are ways of handling family, friends, and beggars. You will have plenty of money to hire advisers who will play the bad cop to your good cop. Refer all beggars to them.

Create a one or two line reply like, I cannot make a decision right now. I will give your name and number to my money guy and he will contact you. Something that you can memorize and use over and over. They may not hear you the first time so repeat as necessary.

The moment you put your mug out there,you invite long lost so called friends, charlatans the like to enter into your life, at which point you could have a battle on your hands attempting to rid yourself of them especially if you refuse to move out of the area. I'd go down to the lottery office and claim it. Arizona doesn't allow anonymous winners but they did pass a law last year where you can have them delay releasing your name for 6 months. I'd take advantage of that to get my ducks in a row, move, and institute some security measures.

The states that allow anonymous claiming of a jackpot prize are few. Some states allow trusts, partnerships, etc. to claim but still release the name(s) of the actual winner(s). If your state requires you to be publicly identified, how would you approach redeeming your ticket and claiming your prize? This is aside from the logical protocol of contacting experts for the financial aspects and referencing the actual claiming itself.
