Anyone with a mortgage, borrowed money. Anyone with a credit card..is borrowing money. Anyone with auto insurance, car payment...is borrowing money. With that aside, I give contingent on the person's ability to pay it back. A promissory note and liens can be formulated for signature.

A few family members deserve my contribution , I don't forget their kindness when I had gone thru some challenges. Not sure how to wrap up that kind of human kindness

True. Well, I guess it all boils down to whom and how one asks for money. If you're a big business worth multi millions, or an aggressive attorney or powerful business tycoon looking for investors, it's fine to ask others for money.

If someone is a poor working class peasant, they'd better not dare ask for money.

It wasn't a relative or even someone I knew who was looking over my shoulder as I was checking some tickets. And after I finished they asked how much I won.

Gee, this thread definitely reads of some stingy responses. But it seems common in America unfortunently. I can't stand stingy people and I've stopped hanging about people who feel asking for money is low self esteem. Stingy friends don't have a place in my circle. I hang with affluent people and people who are barely getting by. I've never felt low self esteem asking them for money...and most times they are giving it without my asking.

Ask Dave Ramsey about co-signing a loan. He will say something like, Never co-sign for another person.

You will end up paying the loan back. Your relationship will be hurt.

The best thing to do is say nothing. Put any winnings that are huge with dividends, principal, interest, and put in financial institutions.

Who do you trust? That is the key word. If friends are asking you your answer is simple.

I know nothing, I didn't see nothing.

Plain and simple. Otherwise you're getting others after you.

Plan a vacation and don't really say anything. Hide your financial statements.

Doesn't it really depend on who is asking and how much they want?

Since we're talking about multi-millionaires , I'll bet most winners allocate a million or two to be divided by family and friends. It doesn't make sense that winners plan on avoiding all their family and friends for fear they will hit them up for a loan. I personally know four people that won more than $4 million and none of them complained about wana-be freeloaders.

No ground rules because there would be no ground. When others feel you got your money for free the need to repay goes out the window. After all, you're rich and don't need to be repaid. I'm not saying I wouldn't give. Just wouldn't give to those who ask me to give. And when I would give it'd be toward someone or something that warms my heart.

This is an epidemic problem. If people need to borrow they're doing something wrong. When the person(s) see $$ symbols on somebody that won a huge amt they go after. Good for your friend. He will make new friends. It's sad but true.

The only ground rules you need to consider are:

There's no such thing as a one time deal. When you loan money to a person (and they KNOW you're worth a lot of money), they'll come back to you when they want/need more. Human equivalent of feeding a cat. Never loan money you can't afford NOT to get back. The only time it's a semi-safe bet is if you get collateral in exchange for your money. Your answer could be this. If a friend or friends ask you for money. You tell them okay then.

I'm not going to lend you money, I am going to give you money under one condition.

People who ask for money have no self-esteem. If allowed to succeed, they will keep coming back like a boomerang. I wouldn't beg for money even if I was on my death bed. I got no kids so begging for a handout to help my child is not a factor.
