It would also be extremely unusual: I'm not aware of any Internet forum that allows members to delete forum posts they don't like.

What if the user could edit out posts on a thread they have initiated?

It might help stop/reduce off topic comments, abusive comments, and possibly reduce the amount of policing required by you.
