This is a false equivalence if I ever saw one.

Unions seek to improve conditions for employees, not expose them to more danger.

If some states allow for anonymity other players in other states should not be disadvantaged just for living in a different locale.

Are you telling me if you played in an anonymous state and had the option to stay anonymous you would do a full press conference without even considering using your right to anonymity

It hasnt always been this bad. As people get bold and desperate they take any way they can to steal your money or become your friend . It has evolved and to the point now, lottery winners are choosing to protect themselves from strangers. Terms and Conditions need to be revised. If you choose NOT to claim anonymously that is your choice, deal with it. I will continue to play after many, many years but would NOT do the picture and conference.

The posters clamoring to remain anonymous reminded me of the workers at our UNION factory who were opposed to joining.

I always told them if they objected to the .......Terms and Conditions.........of their employment, why did they apply for employment?

Same is true for lottery players.

Why in the world would you play the lottery if you strongly object to the ........Terms and Conditions.......

Yep. And there was the poor guy in Georgia who won $400k and was murdered in front of his young children as he begged for his life.

As far as if you dont like it dont play the game -- these are state lotteries and the people of the state have the right to lobby their legislatures to change the laws/rules/regs that govern a state lottery.

I still believe making the name , town, and story public boosts lottery sales.

That belief of mine has been challenged by posters who say their state went anonymous and it didn't hurt the sales.

Yes, maybe ... YOUR state ...went anonymous but the fact is the vast majority of states are still making the names/stories public. Thus, I find it hard to believe lottery players in states that you can remain anonymous never hear/read about the vast majority of winners who go public.

The proof is in the pudding. Has there been an increase or decrease in sales of lottery products since being anonymous was made law? I agree with you on the NO taxes platform.

I am also considering taking the 30-year-US Government bond as my prize. Each year will be an adventure. Most of us are living longer than expected. Handling a lump sum is foreign to me. We live pay check to pay check.

Let's compare our non anonymous states to Australia.

Anonymous and no taxes sure sounds a lot better to me.

Winning a jackpot and remaining anonymous (if possible) sure beats '15 minutes of fame' and never another moment of peace.

destinycreation, The California Lottery Commission sets this rule and it might also be in the law voted for by the voters of California. Have you read what Todd posts in the Top 25 lists? He explains how the California Lottery pays winners in a parimutuel system. California likes to be unique.

Here is my opinion of remaining anonymous...............if one is so concerned about remaining anonymous, don't play the lottery !

I think it really helps lottery sales and builds bigger jackpots whe the names and stories....ARE...made public.

If I win, I won't even get an unlisted land line.

My answering machine recording will change ,though.

It will say................. Yes, you have reached the lottery winner. I am much too busy counting my money to answer or return your call... [ More ]

I don't think I need a security guard to protect a check, however that gives me an idea or 2

You could go pick up the check dressed as a security guard, now it looks like 2 guards going to the bank,

that would confuse anyone that planned to rob you.

Red55, I suggest that you read carefully the Lottery Winners Handbook. Go to www.calottery.com

Click the Win tab. Then look to the upper left side of the page and Winners Handbook will be listed there.

You have written misinformation about the 60-day rule. And the process for either picking up the check at a Lottery District Office or having the check mailed to you.

You are correct that there is no electronic transfer to your bank account.

Only six states in the United States allow winners to remain anonymous: Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and South Carolina.

Unfortunately, no. I've heard that some states do it but my state, Calif, does not. It takes 60 days to get the check and you have to pick it up. What they do offer is a security guard to accompany you from the lottery office to your bank. Weird.

Dont think they can force you to have your photo taken.

They tell people that it is to their benefit to agree to a press conference otherwise the press will hunt them down. But, it is better to skip all publicity and claim your prize on your way out of town to a destination unknown and only returning unannounced when the check is ready.

In Jersey you'll see that many people hold the big check up to cover their face, that's what I plan to do.

Also sometimes you see only the first name and last initial on the big check.

Not sure how that works.

Delaware is anonymous for sure, they brag about it on their website.

Delaware has a state tax from 2.2% to 6.6% and lottery is taxed as regular income.

In Delaware, definitely; as for Jersey, don't think so. Maybe you can claim with a trust or LLC and remain anonymous that way, but not sure.

Also, Delaware has no state income tax, making it the best state in which to win a big jackpot lottery, in my opinion.
