Here in California lottery winners of $599.00 or less can claim at any retailer. Lottery winners who claim a prize of $600.00 or more must claim at a California Lottery District Office or at the Sacramento Office. The District offices are spread throughout the State.

Depends on the state. In Virginia any prize above $600 has to be claimed at a lottery claim center and is paid out by check or prepaid debit card. In Maryland prizes equal to 4,999 or lower can be paid at a store designated as an agent plus, they can choose to pay you in cash or by check. In Maryland any prize $5,000 or over is paid by check and can only be claimed at one of the official lottery claim centers.
