Here it can all go in the recycle bin, even if they don't take junk mail where you live it never hurts to ask if you have enough of it. The only real problem I see is going through all of it to make sure you didn't miss grandma's $5 card.

IMHO it's best if this kind of mail vanishes into a black hole so far as the sender is concerned, any form of contact, even returning it can trigger these people.

It's N/P. I wasn't clear in my post, just trying to say we have options on other things. I seem to recall reading that SS was grandfathered in, that people getting paper checks could continue to do so, that it was just a requirement for new SS recipients, but I don't know if that's since been changed.

Do you really think that the scammers would go after someone who won less than a jackpot?

The post office delivers to addresses, at least they did whn I worked for them. In thisd case NM was the address. Et Vous?

Would have helped a lot if you had seen the episode.

I wasn't asking who you were thinking about. I was asking which lottery winner mail addressed only to lottery winner is for,since every state that has a lottery has thousands of winners every week. The post office may be required to deliver mail to the address it was sent to, but New Mexico isn't an address. They may be required to deliver mail to the person is was a sent to, but if it was sent to lottery winner they can only speculate about who the intended recipient is. As long as there's more... I was only going by what was on the IRS website:

The IRS doesn't initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. This includes requests for PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts.

There were a few incidents where the IRS initiated contact by phone, but those days are over, according to Bankrate.com.

it was TLCML. Family also stopped talking to him because his mother felt he should give his siblings more money than he did. She felt that since he had all those millions, there shouldn't be a limit put on what he gave a brother. If the brother squandered what he was given and needs more, that he should give him more. He felt differently so they all stopped talking to him. He got bags of mail but he apparently liked reading the requests, many made him laugh. Like the poker one.

The IRS has now changed, now they do the email thing and they no longer send your IRS check by mai,l it is sent to either your bank or to a debit card.

They still want you to have a telephone number and an address, besides an email address.

But you still need a mail box at your address.

The telephone that you use doesn't have to be on your name and your address doesn't have to be on your name either.

Do a search on TLC for TLCML or the Curse of the Lottery to refresh your memory.

He owned an auto shop and a former employee tried to burn it down after he got denied a chunk of the money.

Another person wanted him to pay his entry fee and stake him for the Woeld Series of Poker, etc..etc...

Which lottery winner? Anyone who ever watched Miracle on 34th Street should know that it's a federal crime to intentionally deliver mail to the wrong person. If they delivered a couple of pieces to me I'd ignore it, but if they delivered a bunch I'd tell them that I'm not them and to atop delivering other peoples' mail to me.

I researched this a year or so ago when it was brought up in another thread.

There are no laws that require you to have a mailbox and if you pay your utilities, cable, satellite, Internet, etc. online, get the bills via email or have automatic payments enabled, then there's not much to worry about in that regard. Sure, if you get pushback from the management who suggest that their ovens are not geared to handle paper products, simply mention the sizeable contribution you will be making to the crematorium. I am willing to bet it will be thousands lower than the requests coming off those letters. Everyone leaves satisfied.

Use the paper as firewood for the winter!

I pay my telephone and Internet bills online, but there is still some very few mail that I might want to read.

My solution would probably be to move to some other place and keep a low profile, I would not want to change my name unless I really had to.

But no, I could not burn all of the mail or throw it away, but I would not want to have to sort out and or read all of it either.

Thank You, Teddi, I watched the Windfall piece and Susan Bradley. The Windfall on YouTube taught me that I will need to take seriously who I will tell after I win. We all have to be aware of the green eyed monster. The envy, jealousy, and expectations of our relatives and close friends.

Oh absolutely. People will lie like a rug if it means getting free money. In fact, just recently, a daughter killed her mother for forcing her to pretend that she had cancer for years so they could get collect donations.

I wouldn't take anyone's word that they or a child are actually sick. I'd insist on having them sign a HIPAA release for me since I don't believe that just providing proof that the bills exist is a good enough reason to give out money. Charities and hospitals that assist in... [ More ]

About unwanted mail. You do have to keep in mind that there are professional letter writers who will tug at your heartstrings just as much as a true story would. The cons out there will use you. They are all over this world. They will place a target on a lottery winner's back. It is like sharks in a feeding frenzy.

As long as you don't open the mail you can do a return to sender at no cost, but would you really want to spend all that time, or spend the money to pay someone to stamp anywhere from20,000 to 100,000 pieces of mail? If you don't plan on giving those people anything, it'd be a lot easier to simply toss them.

I dont remember the specifics. I do know that you can or you use to be able to send mail to a post office to be held for pick up. Many many many many years ago, I moved to SF and did not have an address for a while. So, I would go to the main post office (scary) to pick up my forwarded mail (and look at the Wanted posters).

Heck, if they can deliver mail to Santa, the North Pole

There were actually about 3 people who reported this happening to them. I believe two of them only had their name, city and state published after the win and the PO got so much mail (thousands of pieces of mail) they couldn't keep it there any longer, but others had gotten private investigators to find one winner's exact address and they sent him letters via Fed Ex. One was still getting bags of mail more than a year after the win.

Looked up the stories on some of these past lottery winners. One complained that there were bushels of mail at the post office for him from people asking for $$$. They knew his name and his town and that is all it takes to send mail to you. I vaguely remember one of the billion dollar jackpot winners also mentioning receiving bushels of mail.
