We have or had more options here. One was a 10 numbers wheel for less money. I think that it was prorata. We also have the full key wheels. I programmed them on my website with more options. Before that happened, there was an article in I believe Lottery World magazine suggesting some state lotteries should consider programming their terminals for multiple bets like full, partial, and abbreviated wheels all on one ticket. There were many lottery syndicates then so that would benefit them more than the average player.

The purpose of the $5000 worth of tickets rule just sounds silly. Who cares who is buying the tickets because without anyone buying tickets the state will not make any money. And we all know they love the money.

True, true. They work for their salary, if they don't do their work they should hand in their notice. I'm never going to buy 5000$ in tickets, but if the clerk didn't sell it to me I#d be ticked off.

It's the store that gets the commissions and also the prize if its clerks sell the winning ticket. Some clerks think they work for themselves and not the store.

I wonder how long it would take to generate 5,000 different combinations, and fill out 1,000 play slips.

I doubt the clerks at the store where I buy tickets would run them, unless I paid them extra.

There are lower odd MN games that might make it possible to cover all combinations.

MN Northstar Cash is a Pick 5 of 31 game that has only 169,911 total combinations.

The jackpot threshold to break even, meaning less taxes, is about $250,792.

Anything above that jackpot would result in a profit by covering all possible combinations.

Looking at the Northstar jackpot history though, we can see it's never gone above that value, interesting, aye.

Sounds like developing a scheme to win a major prize is illegal.

The lottery doesn't get to make anything illegal. The most they can do is deny you a prize for not following the rules.

I don't see any point to the rule about purchases of $5,000 worth of tickets. It doesn't prohibit purchases of $10,000 or $100,000 worth of tickets, and you could buy $4,998 worth of tickets from multiple retailers and avoid the reporting requirement.

I remember reading a story here at The LP about an online game in Massachusetts where some high rollers from Michigan would travel to one particular store located in a small town in Mass that would close it doors for the day while the high rollers took over the lottery terminal and bought a huge number of tickets. It was something about a flaw in the game that gave anybody playing a lot of combo's an unfair advantage. The Mass Lottery eventually found out about it and withdrew the game. G5

Their story was featured on the TV show How they do that? and as I remembered they took control of a SevenEleven lottery terminal for three days and tried to run all their preprinted play slips, fortunately the winning combination was among the ones they played. Afterward Virgina limited the time one player could play if others players were waiting.

Yep, you'd have to keep it under the $5,000, but you'd need lots of people and lots of retailers to get it done for those lower odds jackpot games.

Just have a roving swarm of lotto groupies meandering across the state and playing every possible lottery retailer outlet... it could happen.

The rules are in other MN games, too.

Although Lucky for Life is a fixed winning jackpot, there are others in MN which the jackpot is an increasing value.

Northstar Cash and Gopher 5 could reach a jackpot value that would make it economically possible to cover all combinations; with a lot of time, people and effort, it might be done.

As for f, my guess is The MN Lottery doesn't get very many reports from retailers regarding the single purchase of $5,000 worth of Lucky For Life tickets for a single drawing.

If a player really can afford to buy $5,000 worth of tickets, what's to stop them from buying just short of $5,000 worth? Suppose they bought $4,995 worth so as to avoid having their name and address reported? The MN Lottery would probably learn who did it anyway, especially if a grand prize winner came from that batch... [ More ]

Even winning a grand prize more than once could make them suspicious enough do deny paying up.
