I pick one up if I see them lying around. Very rare these days since most stores don t keep recepticals nearby plus the lottery swapped those old kiosks out that had the built in slot to insert non winners.

I started doing this in April of last year. I only enter 10 dollar and up tickets in the second chance drawings. I have entered 100's of non winners. I also have cashed in over 200 dollars in missed winners that weren't spotted. My biggest find was only 25.00 but you never know. This is one can in one store so who knows just how many winners are discarded. Good luck

Anytime I go into a store I look in trash cans for the throw aways, and l, like some of the others here, enter them for 2nd chance drawings. What the heck, nothing to lose

Hi, new member here, perusing the forums, and YES I also do the same. Right now there is a second chance here in Illinois for the Holiday instant tickets. One particular gas station near me always have several. They never say a thing when I dig through the cans. In fact they also have a can directly next to the vending machine INSIDE the gas station...always full of them Always thought that anything thrown in trash would presumed to be abandoned.

there are two stores by my house that i do this on a regular basis, I have found multiple winners and have received many many thousands o f free replay points to use in my states monthly and quarterly replay drawings. I have asked both stores if they mind, and they both have no issue with it, in fact they told multiple people do it, so finding a full can of tickets is hit or miss

Ive found many winners in the trash- and lots of points on the second chance drawing.

If there was a $20 bill laying on top of the garbage can you wouldn't pick it up?

Dumpster Diving and the Law: Dumpster diving is legal in the United States except where prohibited by local regulation. According to a 1988 Supreme Court Ruling (California vs. Greenwood), when a person throws something out, that item is now in the public domain.

It's no different from people looking through trash to get cans bottles to recycle. But, they actually get money for that. With the scratchers that are found, there's still no guarantee of winning.

My advice is... Its better to earn a living through work than digging through other peoples garbage. Should be obvious though.

QUESTION: Anyone know what are the laws about looking for old Scratchers in public trash cans of 7-11's, liquor stores, smoke shops? Most employees don't mind, but there's always a few anal stinkers out there who say you can't go through the trash. Most establishments have trash cans INSIDE OUTSIDE their facilities.

(In case anyone knows why I'm asking, I ran across a youtube video in which this guy finds Scratchersfrom various trash cans to enter the 2nd chance drawings. It seems harmless.... [ More ]
