Maybe I was too hard on The Connecticut Lottery.

Three and a half million people live in Connecticut. 12.8 million people live in Pennsylvania. Obviously there's a bigger opportunity to sell raffle tickets in PA than there is in CT.

CT has been selling their raffle tickets since Oct 15th, and having sold 24,800 as of yesterday says they are selling at a rate of about 800 per day. My guess is they'll sell out anyway. The big rush to buy tickets at Christmas will probably get the job done.G... [ More ]

Well, I just took a look at my CT SuperDraw tickets, which in turn made me go to the CT Lottery's website...

First, it isn't $10,000 per player for the top prize in each of the Early Bird drawings. It's $1,000 per player for a total of ten players. Now I know why my ticket numbers are in the 24,800 to 24,850 range. (That's about 10% of all tickets that can be sold.) Looks like the player response to Early Bird drawings isn't as robust as PA's was for The Early Bird drawings leading up to the... [ More ]

Was in CT yesterday and thanks to your post I knew they were running The Superdraw Raffle again. I stopped at a gas station and bought three. It's been quite a while since they last offered it.

I wont be buying any more than three tickets though. Pennsylvania started selling tickets last Tuesday for it's New Years Millionaire Raffle which I prefer over CT's. Four one million dollar winners vs one in CT, and the odds are 125,000 to 1. Early Bird winners top prize is $100,000 vs $10,000 too.

Shame, but understandable. Raffle tickets are a struggle to sell. Not just because of the price, but also the long wait for the drawing. Somewhat surprised PA Lottery still conducts such raffles despite the expense and relatively low profit margin (30%-40% verses usual 50%) compared to regular numbers games. Glad it's still available. Will likely buy a ticket or two.

As to why it's still offered. My guess is many loyal players expect there to be a raffle, though despite not earning much itsel... [ More ]

Florida stopped doing them, in part, because they didn't make enough money. They would release 750,000 tickets and only sell about 600,000. They still made a profit, but it was minor. Basically, they made just as much profit on a few nights of Fantasy 5 drawings. Plus it cost a lot to advertise and promote. With that said, I'd like to see it come back with a small ticket pool. It's possible they bring it back in the summer.

Massachusetts stopped doing raffles in 2014. I don't know why. I liked them. Rhode Island stopped doing them also a few years back. And they were extremely popular too in RI. It was a big thing. I got 1 RI raffle ticket once in 2011. I wish they do them again so I can take another trip out there. I went out to to Connecticut to get 3 of there raffle tickets a couple weeks ago. $1,000,000 prize at 1 in 275,000 odds. Hopefully I can get lucky.

It was hard for me to believe that PA wouldn't have a New Year's raffle in 2018. They've been holding raffles at least twice per year since 2003. But they did manage to scare me a bit this Fall. In the past, they started advertising the New Years Raffle in October on their website. Until just recently there was no mention of it, and even then I had to dig down to find it. Tickets went on sale yesterday.

For the first time this past July, PA, held eight Early Bird drawings.
