Interesting point about Canada, he won money in Canada and then tried to bring some into New York. In most states in the US there are taxes.

If you scroll down under the Quick Links section and click on USA MEGA, then click on the FAQ's under either Jackpot game you can find all kinds of info about claiming a prize, including how long you have to claim it and the tax rates for each state.

Also, if you click on Jackpot Analysis, you can find out the tax rate and how much you will get after taxes, and how much you will get each year if you take the annuity.

Lady in the store from Connecticut was asking same thing today, if she could cash it. No you cannot ever cash a Connecticut game in New York State. Nick, your example lacks important details. The tax requirement would depend upon the winner's country of residence.

And it is not safe to say one gets taxed one way or another. In Canada, as in most countries, there is no tax on lottery winnings.

Hey Winoneday, thanks for commenting. Good for you on your wins. But I'd like to say 1 thing, a few years back as I recall, a man won some money in Canada, and tried to bring the money into the US, guess what, he had to pay more tax to the US laws. So it's safe to say, you get taxed 1 way or the other.

Not only can you cross state lines to buy tickets, you can also cross country lines. I live in Canada and have had a couple of medium wins in US games. Big enough where there was a withholding tax. I filed for a IRS identification number so I could file a US tax return and got most of the tax refunded.

Where you pay taxes depends on the taxes in the state where you buy the ticket and in your state of residence.

The state that sells the ticket gets the first crack at it, because it's income from that state. If that state has an income tax that doesn't exempt income from its lottery you'll owe income tax on your (lottery) income from that state. Part of the confusion is probably because MM and PB multi-state games and even though all 44 states use the same numbers, we can only cash those tickets in the states where we buy them. If you go into another state to buy tickets, if they win, you must go back to that state to collect the winnings.

But I saw a guy try to cash a WVA pick-3 ticket in Ohio. Alcohol might have been involved.

Slick Nick, I was born and raised in California so I know about taxes lol. Ended up in WA State and it is getting worse than California. Wish I lived there now, at least the state has beautiful weather, such a change from ice and snow here, UGH.

LOL LEJARDIN, and it's just the opposite with me, I live in New York. When I was a kid, because of taxes always being raised, there were license plates made that said, NY Land of Taxes on the bottom of the plate. That was quickly stopped by Governor Rockerfeller , he was pissed at that. LOL New York is a tax heavy state.

I live in WA state and drive to Idaho for tickets at times.

My experience has been if you buy a ticket in a different state you have claim and collect it there.

Perhaps you're confused because of federal laws against gambling by using mail or telecommunications. That prevents you from gambling across state lines, but you can cross state lines in order to gamble within another state.

This is a topic I've heard contrasting opinions on? The one that stands out most is, you have to live in the state to be able to collect your winnings. But yet people continually go across state lines and bet. And without a doubt there have been some wins of some sort. I heard once that a if you get a mailbox in the particular state you win in, (if you win) you can declare yourself a resident. Has anyone heard of an out of state winner collecting
