The MegaMillions Jackpot increase is directly proportional to the size of the Jackpot! In other words folks aren't lining up to play when the Jackpot is 40 Million and they are when the Jackpot is 400 Million.

I don't really understand what the appeal of Mega Millions is supposed to be now. The odds are worse than Powerball, and the prize amounts are only more for the lesser prizes (like $10 instead of $7, or $500 instead of $100). But then with a 4+1 match, Powerball prize is $50,000, while Mega Millions same-tier prize is only $10,000. So.. same price, but worse odds, and the 'medium' prize is significantly less than Powerball's.. and the jackpot grows slower, too? I guess I just don't understand ho... [ More ]

It also doesn't help that they added an extra 10 millions in odds against you from winning compared to the Powerball for the same 2 dollar price. My money will go to PB until the Mega gets up to a nice amount.

The promised increased jackpots are not happening.

A couple of weeks ago it increased by almost $90 million. It the increases they'll see (and that the lottery will benefit from) when we get huge jackpots because of the new odds.

Actually, Mega Millions jackpot started at $15 million at the time, so each of those jackpot runs started with:

$15m

$20m

$25m

$30m

It's possible that some Mega Millions players are used to not playing for a few drawings after a jackpot win and are not choosing to play based on jackpot size.

Before they changed the MM rules Oct/Nov, the roll overs were higher. The consternation is that it is difficult to get excited about smaller than average jackpots.

I'm not sure what all the consternation is about. Each game (Powerball and Mega Millions) has a minimum jackpot increase amount per drawing written into its rules. Powerball's minimum increase is $10 million, and Mega Million's minimum increase is $5 million.

These rules are described on USA Mega, in the Mega Millions FAQ page and the Powerball FAQ page. Look for the section titled, What determines the size of the jackpot?

It only goes up 5 for the first two or three draws after a jackpot. Then it usually goes up by 8 million then 10 and beyond. I bought advance tickets for every draw in January so I am in no matter what.

I am not buying tickets right now for PB or MM but when I looked to see if it was won last night, I too, was surprised it only increased by $5 million. Not that $5 million is something to scoff at, just a surprise is all.

Remember how they sold the new MM game by comparing it to PB? It may start at $40 Million but unlike PB there isnt a $10 Million increase per rollover.
