this is common misassociation, you are comparing two different arrangements.

an arrangement where order is important is called a Permutation, it is presented in and referred to as Exact Order.

an arrangement where order is not important is called a Combination; it is presented in and referred to as Ascending Order.

numbers drawn can occur in any arrangement like your example of 2 4 1 5 6 3, Exact Order.

I'm not sure exactly what you're really asking, but here's how it works:

# of Combinations for 49, choosing 6 = 49! / (6! * (49-6)!) = 49! / (6!*43!) (! means factorial, which is multiplying all the numbers from that down to 1 - 49! = 49*48*47 ... *3*2*1)

= 6.082818640342675608722521633213e+62 / ( 720 * 6.0415263063373835637355132068514e+52)

The e+62 means that the decimal place is shifted 62 places, so that the actual number has 62 digits between the 6 and the decimal place. That's... [ More ]

You're absolutely correct! Now, this is where it becomes very interesting because that one particular combination must be drawn out of all the other millions that are also in the mix...and YOU must then possess that winning ticket.

For starters there are 119,877,472 possible outcomes in a 6/69 lotto game. You get the number of permutations by factoring 69 six times (86,311,779,840) and then divide that by factoring 6 (720).

Lotto numbers are combinations and the numbers are always shown on a ticket as in a low to high order so regardless of which number was drawn first, second, etc.

Actually, the odds of getting the 5 numbers out of the 69 are 1 in 11,688,053. That is the total possible combinations of the numbers 1-69 regardless of the order they get drawn in. If the game was also based on order of draw, it would be almost impossible to win and hardly anyone would play.

But what confuses me if that the chosen numbers are counting straight like for example 10 20 30 40 even if machine draws first 30 20 10 etc. If you had to pick the numbers in order the machine draws them then it would be almost impossible but since you win if you choose 10 20 30 40 even though the machine draws it in different order, thats where I try to understand why the possible combinations add to 14 million or so.

Edit: How do you calculate the other possible combinations

It is 1 in 14 million odds that you will get the combination of all of those first five numbers in one draw. There are basically millions of combinations of numbers that could happen with the numbers 1-69. The odds for getting the first five numbers are far less than getting all of them plus that 6th number. That is when the odds shoot way up.

Hi Everyone.

So since I've never been good at math I would like to ask a question here. A chance to win a 6 number (1-69) is around 1 in 14 million. Could someone explain to me how it is so? The draws are not played in numerical order no matter what number comes first, second... Like if I pick 1 2 3 4 5 6 and the machine draws 2 4 1 5 6 3 that means it is a winning ticket. So can someone explain how does it come to 14 million?
