John Oliver talked about the lottery for about 15 minutes on his show. He hit the nail on the head. Hilarious.

He said that North Carolina spends less on education now than when the lottery began. They replaced corporate income taxes that used to fund education and replaced that with lottery money. Cringeworthy indeed.

Well, I'd like to take a shot at this. In my opinion, this a triple compounded issue with which first, teachers really aren't paid well enough for the multifaceted jobs they perform. In addition to educating our kids, they they assume mentoring, care giving, parenting, and sometimes babysitting duties. As of lately, they're also being propositioned to become security enforcers-protectors of those same kids...for a 'bonus.' I won't delve into any of that because this isn't the place but, the obvi... [ More ]

Thanks Soledad. Many people believe that the lotteries do in fact pit lottery proceeds into the school systems, BUT take out an equal or greater amount somewhere else in that same system.

I cringe at the mention of the North Carolina Education Lottery. That's just about an in-your-face to the players and the schools.

Thank you Coin Toss. I agree. I have also said it. How much do they give? Not as much as one might think. I don t know exactly how much the Oklahoma Lottery itself makes in a year, but I saw that their DOE annual budget was $3 billion. The lotteries very early before last century, were ideas for raising funds to assist in public works projects. Then they were banned. Then they came back. And now it seems like the only thing that matters is higher ticket sales; which they ve done in Oklahoma.
