People are greedy and Jerks Jealous, envious, resentful, and killjoys. Stop talking about winning. Especially to strangers who you do not know or trust.

This is difficult but necessary if you want to keep your winnings.

The seven States that allow you to claim anonymously understand this. Texas is the latest State to grant you anonymity.

I read the 2 related stories where the judge awarded the money to Duncan and then a couple weeks later ordered a new trial. Does any one know what happened after the new trial as far as who got the winnings?

The biggest lesson from all this is, Always check your own tickets.

Thanks, Todd! This is much appreciated. I also remember an intense discussion among a few of the members here, including myself, over the idea of probing trash cans and retrieving old scratch tickets simply to rescan-recheck them in case people overlooked winners. Hey, I was honest about it and told folks that I was on a mission to do just that but, I did have gloves. Another interesting thread which again takes me back to something also very relevant and some will remember. About six years ago, there was much ado over a scratch-off ticket which was thrown away by one lady and found by another lady...in a dumpster. Ewww,I don't know. Don't think I would rummage through garbage. Heck, I yell at the bum who digs through my recycling can on garbage day. Maybe that's mean but that is some nasty business. You never know what's in there.

As you allude later in your post, is that a good description of what they were doing or should it be rummaging through the garbage ? Or maybe throwing garbage on the floor. It's well within the store's rights to kick somebody out for neatly and discreetly taking discarded tickets out of the trash, but it's just good business sense to toss somebody who's making a mess or potentially bothering employees or other customers by rummaging in the garbage.... Legally speaking the store has custody of the trash from beginning to end. It is still stealing to take items out of the trash. One of the hardest things I had to do was convince employees they could not raid the dumpster for items we had thrown away. Even when stores receive full credit for shop worn items and returns, the vendor does so with the understanding they will be properly disposed of.

I got banned from a gas station for taking lottery tickets out of the trash. I found $30 in unclaimed winners last week. The lady had a huge meltdown and threatened to call the cops. I went through it two times before with no problems. It was because I found winners.
