If you can guess first two numbers 7 and 18 then pool is 19-49. Then you have 4/30.

He saying that his friend guessing two lowest numbers to be drawn.

Correct. This ambiguity was on purpose. With the 2 first numbers known the odds actually would depend on the second known number as it would determine the field of numbers to choose from.

besides your initial statement was also controversial... you mentioned that your imaginary friend could always pick two FIRST numbers correctly and therefore some people assumed that those two numbers would of been the first two in the lines arranged in numerical order... that would have complicated the calculations and would have made the probability variable between 7432 and... Thanks. Sure enough. Jade has given the correct answer right at the very start. I stopped reacting to all those posts as people seem to totally ignore the fact that these 2 numbers are known. This way it becomes quite a different game. I personally would like to face such odds in lotteries.

You certainly realize it was kind of an intellectual exercise. I know no such guy.

As someone else wrote, you've simply changed it into a 4/47 game.

Whether the first two numbers drawn are 1 and 2, or 49 and 48, or anything else, is irrelevant. You always have 47 numbers left, 4 of which will be winning numbers selected at random.

If you could buy a ticket like this... choose just 4 numbers because we give you the first two for free ... with a jackpot of $7 million, even with no other prizes and no profit for the government, the ticket would have to cost $40

There is only one set of wining numbers drawn.

Every one of those 24 picks is individually up against the same odds, not /24.

Anything else can be considered lottery urban legend promoted by system sellers, ticket sellers, and the lotteries themselves.

This will probably open a can of worms here but many people fall for the myth of miracle odds reduction.

If your first 2 numbers change your overall odds will change as well. The second number will actually determine the odds (the way you described it). The bigger the second number the better the odds as the pool for the remaining 4 numbers is reduced. The logical conclusion seems that you should play more aggressively if the second number is large - as long as you are really certain of your first 2 numbers (and it's a big if). Thanks for your suggestion, but irrespective of the way the drawings are held i.e. ball drop or prngs it does not change the overall picture. The draw order is irrelevant.

The first number is 1 out of 49 and the probability is 1, the second number is 1 out of 48 with the same probability of 1. The third number is 1 out of 47 numbers, the fourth is one out of 46 numbers, the fifth is 1 out of 45 numbers and the last sixth is one out of 44 numbers. The odds of matching 2/6 with 24 lines are better than 1 : 1 so your friend will always match two but that doesn't make matching 6/49 easier.

Not quite so. It would be better to play 6/49 with prior knowledge of the first two numbers than 4/47 just picking at random.

Let's say the we are in 6/49 and the first drawn number is 4 and the second is 17. The third one must be upwards 17 so the field of numbers 3 to 6 is limited to 17 upwards.

However, if the probability of knowing 2 of the 49 numbers is very, very high; say near 100%,

A friend of mine has decided to play 6/49 game. He wants to play 24 quick picks and knows the odds of hitting the jackpot playing those 24 lines is 13 983 816/ 24= 1: 582 659.

Here's the question. Assuming that he would know the first 2 correct numbers and then pick the remaining 4 numbers at random would it change his odds of hitting the jackpot and if so by how much?
