Many years ago, I knew someone who played the same numbers every week.

One week he forgot to buy a ticket. HIS NUMBERS CAME UP.

This was before lottery subscription was available. If you want to play the same numbers for every drawing, buy a subscription and be sure to buy the next one without missing a drawing. You DO NOT want to be that guy

The biggest mistake, would be to have my numbers come up on a draw I did not play in. Yep I have the lottery mentality. I also play 8$/week (1 draw for MM/PB per wed/sat). So for me, as for a lot of people, this is pocket money that is already in the budget under the entertainment catagory.

I think the biggest mistake is when people play more than they can afford. I buy $12 a week to pay for my little piece of the dream, and don't deviate when the jackpots get super high. Besides, it always seems like it is some schmuck who only buys one ticket that wins, so I might as well be that schmuck

You know who has the real advantage when playing? The clerks who punch in your numbers for the tickets. They see all the regulars everyday, they hear all the bets, they see the winners and losers daily. They get tips all the time from players. Tips on what to play, tips in cash. To them they just see it as something that comes to them, with no negative thoughts at all. Believe me some of them do play.

There is a gentleman that works at the local Ford dealer that drives the shuttle service van. He is in his mid 70's and runs half marathons and wins in his age group. He doesn't run 26 mile marathons anymore. He says there are quite a few his age that run. Sometimes age is just a number. Myself, I haven't run since I was in basic.

True but we have to differentiate between thinking positive and flat out dreaming.

People bet something like $3300 to win $200 on Mike Tyson because they were positive he was going to beat Buster Douglas.

Someone with ability who is positive they'll get a contract with a major league team is thinking positive, ok.

An 89 year old who is positive he'll get a contract to play is dreaming.

Biggest mistake is playing the same number every day for months on end. If you play the same number $1 straight and $1 box, two draws a day, after 145 days if you win straight and box you won't even break even.

$4 a day x 145 days = $580 spent.

I'd say this is kind of a touchy subject in a way because, as noisegate stated, being positive is a requirement for success with anything. However, when it comes to lottery games such as PB and MM's, I think most players maintain a balance of reasonable optimism while still understanding what they're up against. That's because we as humans are hard-wired to think positive. If we or a loved one has cancer, and going under the knife, no one says see you in heaven. We hoping to come out okay for awhile, until we truly are at death's door. Ultimately, we know someone will win, why not think of that someone as us?

In the context of Mega Millions . . not paying the extra dollar for the Megaplier (except California).

Around 24 times better odds of a 5+0 win than 5+1 . . and $2-5 million is definitely better that $1 million

We had a player in Vegas who walked right into a monster hand one night. He won over $10,000 on one shooter (craps).

Then he had a conversation with the pit boss where he said he didn't know what to do now. The boss said Walk . He said he couldn't. He further said he knew how to gt in the game, get stuck and play the rest of the night to get even, but winning right off the bat, no.

He went tapioca.

Very typical.

Exchanging winning tickets for more tickets (this will double the already high house edge; just take the money and leave the store!)

Just my two cents but judging from thousands of posts on this board I'd say one of the biggest mistakes lottery players make is assuming they are going to win.

Regardless of the game (any form of gambling) the house is in business because you are supposed to lose.
