I once got stung on this one. I bought a $2 scratch ticket at the local Holdiay gas station here.

When the gal behind the counter handed it to me it was already torn off the pack. I started to scratch it with a penny and noticed that the ticket had been micro scratched across the bar code that you scan in the scanners on the counter to find out if it is a winner.

Of course I lost and I wonder how many other people she stung on that one. I never saw her working there again. I can only... [ More ]

It's impossible. At least here in VA and I would hope every other state.

All you can do by scanning the back is to activate the roll. There's no way to check to see if it's a winner or not without scratching the front which means you will eat the ticket if it's a loser. (That or get busted for fraud) Only an idiot would buy a ticket with the bar code scratched off.

In FL, if you scan the rear bar code they have to enter a 3 digit number which is only revealed if the front bottom is scratched. There is also a bar code on the front which does does not require the 3 digit code but is only revealed if the front bottom is scratched. So I would say hard to do in FL.

I've often wondered what would stop an agent from scanning a scratch ticket to see if it was a winner and then cash it. Losing tickets would then be sold. Granted, it maybe hard to implement this scam on a large scale, since it would be difficult to check multiple tickets in a roll in this manner. Also some tickets have some safeguards built in to make this harder, such as Massachusetts and the Void If Removed portion of the ticket, which agents use to verify a winner. But even in Massachusetts... [ More ]
