I don't know about other states, but in Texas, nobody gets paid until lottery officials have conducted an investigation to satisfy themselves that the purchase details conformed to state law.

Yes, persons who win a million or more may remain anonymous as far as the public is concerned, but the lottery isn't going to withhold federal taxes and release any prize money until they are certain that they are paying the right person.

I prefer letting winners claim through a trust or LLC or other entity, and making only the name of that entity public. People who want to go down rabbit holes can dig for the names of the people behind the entity if they want. Most people are not going to be that motivated to do so. But it's reassuring to know you could verify the existence of a real winner (who is not an employee of the lottery or a lottery tech vendor) if you wanted to.

I have never seen any lp member demand to know who any anonymous winner was. It is news if the ticket is claimed in an anonymous state or non-anonymous state. The human interest story is the fact that the ticket was claimed and not lost and any other info they choose to share, such as how the numbers were picked. I would love to see an example to support your claim. Who are these folks

I can see your point on that possibility, Raven. I don't necessarily concur that a majority would have to or want to know. Some might, out of inquisitive interest but if anonymity was standard, as it is in the states you mentioned earlier, then a larger majority wouldn't be concerned. Most likely(IMHO) it would be the skeptics, non-anonymity supporters and conspiracy theorists leading the charge in opposition. Artist...I couldn't agree more. Many plans, ideas and goals have been discussed extensively around the dinner table. The so-called whiners ,as it has been stated, have their wants, including personal safety. If the winner/s claim next year than their tax day would be April 15, 2020. Check with your CPA about quarterly payments.

That's true, but outside of the movies there aren't a lot of conspiracies that involve lots of people and still stay secret. IMHO the lottery should check on winners exactly the same way whether they're allowed to remain anonymous or not, with the only difference being what information is released to the public. I don't think winners should be anonymous, in general, though it seems to be an unpopular opinion here. Secrecy allows corruption to thrive. Unfortunately, making winners' names public records is one of the best ways (if not the best way) to ensure the integrity of the lottery.

I agree! Remember that some of us want to start a charitable foundation so the focus is not on how many cars or mansions we will buy. My family and I have been blessed with great educations and careers but to help on a larger scale level, a foundation would be perfect.

And all these whiners are helping to change laws regarding claiming anonymously .

and some of it is jackpot envy to the point of becoming an unhealthy obsession. Do normal people really have serious discussions about winning a Jackpot at the dinner table

I guess that each State is different.

Here in California, I am wondering when you will be ushered into the Lottery Winner's Room. Will it be after you present your ticket to the receptionist.

The receptionist may want to take your Claim Form, ticket, ID card, and social security card.

Asking if you have made personal copies of all the important documents. Then you could be asked into the Lottery Winner's Room. After getting your ID card and social security card back.

In the previous billion dollar jackpot that was split three ways, the couple from California who won didn't claim their third until about six months later, and as a result the media had much less interest in them than the people who claimed earlier. Maybe the SC winner(s) are waiting for a really big story to hit the news cycle so their story will be buried.

Actually, players in Texas must specify cash or annuity at the time of ticket purchase. If they buy QP tickets from a vending machine I believe it's automatically cash option. I don't do that, I use playslips, and they have to be marked cash or annuity.

You are misunderstanding the nuance of the article as to why is this even an issue? It means why don't all states have an anonymous option with all the privacy concerns. The fact is they do not have this uniform option. So winners are news.
