Actually, Mega Millions and Powerball are at equal values for the same rollover draw cycle.

The only reason Mega Millions appears to be ahead is, because it is one draw ahead of Powerball.

We can see in the table below, when both lotteries are synced together at the start of their rollover cycles, Powerball does get off to a good start, but slows in growth and eventually becomes nearly equal to Mega Millions jackpot growth.

They just look at the numbers glowing on the lottery signage and the buy the one that has the higher number.

I'd think that would often be true, but it isn't what has happened after the two big jackpots were won at the end of October. For 10/30 and 10/31 MM was $45 million and PB was $40 million. Despite the $5 million advantage MM increased to $52 million while PB increased to $53 million. Powerball is a slightly better bet, owing to its better odds, despite the current differential in their value.

Neither is actually a good bet at this point, both having low pre-tax expectation values. The big difference in the expectation values derives as well from the differences in their minor prizes. The minor prizes for Powerball add 0.18 to the expectation value; for Megamillions, 0.12.

I agree with you weshar75! In the Mega Millions largest jackpot they were 49.4 million dollars short of the record when the jackpot was hit everyone

Mega Millions is still second until they can reach past Powerball's first place jackpot back in 2016. Mega has the biggest single ticket winner with SC winner but Powerball holds the title for biggest annuity and biggest cash prize ever. I do not think Powerball has anything to worry about their is plenty of money to go around for both multi-state games.-weshar75

The last jackpot in the Mega Millions run someone won a $1.537 Billion dollar jackpot in South Carolina! So far both jackpots are in a rolling jackpot run right now with Mega Millions in the lead right now! I hope both jackpots continue to roll until they reach over $1.6 Billion dollars until one winning ticket hits in both rounds everyone especially you Raven62

The two lotteries' sales and jackpot increments have behaved similarly since the 2017 price and matrix changes to MM, which essentially rendered them identical lotteries. I can't even remember if it was MM or PB that had the last billy jackpot, and I bet a lot of other players can't either. It seems to me that PB used to always do better than MM at any particular jackpot amount, but I'm wondering if the recent $1.5 billion jackpot has changed that.

After the two big jackpots were won PB grew more quickly for a while, until they were nearly equal at 172 and 171 million for 11/27 and 11/28. Assuming PB rolls tomorrow night they'll be at 245 and 230 for 12/11 and 12/12. Those are increases of 73 million and 59 million. It's not an enormous difference, but MM has outpaced PB by abou...
