But wait! What about the 129 combo? Yep, that's the exception, isn't it? In 2018, 129 behaved just like I would have wanted combos to behave, nice and smooth, building up to a top-tier combo in the final months. It's embarrassing to admit, but 129 slipped under my radar, especially at the end of the year, when that was exactly the kind of number that I should have been looking for. Rats! These things are always clearer with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight...

I was trying to find a way to tease out the year's trends in the Virginia Pick 3 numbers. My original thought was to deflate the numbers in 4 quarters, the way businesses do their numbers. I did that and it was pretty ho-hum. Then I tried it progressively, so I deflated the whole year together, the last 6 months together, the last 3 months together, and the past month together. When I did that, the pattern of the year suddenly became stupidly clear. What do you see? I'll tell you what I see down... [ More ]
