The answer is probably fairly benign. The huge amount of immediate wealth is taking planning. Also, the more time that lapses, the more people forget about it. The winner is going to come forward and it will be claimed by lawyers on behalf of a trust in order to hide the identity of the winner as much as possible. April 19th is a long time away. I wouldn't be surprised if the winner claims it in late March.

Perhaps the winner thinks he or she must wait until after the actual tax filing deadline in April to not pay any taxes?

Or perhaps the winner had a heart attack after realizing he/she won so much money?

Or perhaps the winner is away on a cruise / mission trip to a poor African/South American/Asian country?

Or perhaps the winner is on a road trip through the Southwest?

Or perhaps the winner got mobilized to serve in Afghanistan and hasn't checked his/her ticket to even know he/she act... [ More ]

No, if something like that was permissible, it could open up a pandora's box of shenanigans such as the lottery declaring an actual winning ticket invalid and then dumping that money back into the pool to create even more of a buying frenzy. I wonder how much of returned jackpots to the states actually end up as bonuses for the lottery corporation ceo and executives? It would be nice if some of the returned money could be used to bless veterans, teachers, homeless people, orphans and such. If so... [ More ]

According to Fox Business News..... Americans forgo about $2 billion in total unclaimed prize money annually. And the higher the drawing, the higher the likelihood there will be multiple, smaller unclaimed prizes.

Anyone have any idea on the largest unclaimed jackpot in the USA over the last 25-30 years ? I remember of a MM back around 2002 around $65 Million. I don't know if there has been one of 100+ million or not

Coming up on the 90 day mark. Does make one give thought as to why this much time ? Lost ticket ? perhaps... Slow in developing a team of professionals ? perhaps..Waiting for the new year ? perhaps... Illness or incarceration ? perhaps..... or maybe the person is one of these people that just doesn't check their tickets that often and has a pile of them on their desk/dresser ? What boggles my mind is the interest rate sum it's accumulating just for sitting there waiting to be claimed.

I think the person checked into a retreat coming to terms with the fact they lost the ticket. That's my fake story and I'm sticking to it:p

Beau Rivage Casino over a decade ago had Wildfire, Quickfire with Horse Racing. The Fairgrounds trumpet sound would sound on the whole casino intercom, then on the slot display screen, horses would race. The #4 horse was the first place winner for the Wildfire, or Quickfire Jackpots, you would get that amount of money in Freeplay on a separate card for the high limit gaming area. People who played the Jackpot Freeplay $100.00 max bet won big, taxes had to be paid on the win amount.

At a casino, when they do hot seats , they call a player's name (someone whose card is in a slot machine). If the player doesn't go up to the desk in time (usually about 3 minutes), they go to the next one. If they are going to award 10 hot seats winners, they will award 10 hot seat winners even if they have to call 82 names. That's the fair way to do things rather than just going oh darn, prize went unclaimed, we win! .

Adding it to the current jackpot makes some sense, but that would need to be well publicized, so announcing that it will be added to a future jackpot might make more sense. Perhaps using unclaimed prizes to fund an annual raffle would be a good choice. That way there's just one drawing and there are guaranteed winners. Of course the purpose of the lottery is to make money for the states, not the players, so I wouldn't hold my breath.... [ More ]

As if this game weren't a rip-off already, an unclaimed prize of this size going back to the government means that instead of the state taking half your bet, the state takes your entire bet. Great.

Each member lottery gets back what it contributed to the pot, and what they do with the money depends on their state laws. Maryland, for example, puts it in their unclaimed prize fund, which funds player prizes. California sends it to the education fund.

Adding it to the current pot would be pretty cool though.

I don't know what each state or Texas does with unclaimed money.

In Texas, I think it goes into the general fund, but not really sure. If I get time I'll research it. Busy figuring out how to win a jackpot. LOL.

Wonder how much $$ will be generated in interest for the state of SC over the time period if no winner comes forward ?

Should nobody come forward for the claim and the money is sent back to each respective state, what does TX do with their share ? all going back to education or another prize someplace
