Askovman, I got no clue what to tell you. I did think Todd had the right idea, (post the info here). It would certainly get the lottery's attention.

I searched and read a bit about the use of the scanners and came across one article in particular that you might want to read. It's called The Consequences of Lottery Ticket Tampering posted by the Wallin and Klarich law corporation. It details the plight of one, Francis Bou Karam of California, facing some 18 years, 4 months prison time for s... [ More ]

The intent to defraud could come from not using an actual purchased legitimate ticket in the ticket scanner and also from attempting to discover a ticket's status before purchasing it. Also, any store clerk helping with this could be subjecting their store to possible loss of their lottery selling license. I would suspect any state lottery department would frown on a clerk that was participating in a scheme whose intent was to determine winning tickets before they were sold (note that the scheme... [ More ]

I doubt this is a real flaw in the system and I also doubt the success claimed. The number on the back of the ticket (usually the sequence#, book#, and ticket#) does not include the additional validation data that is on the barcode underneath the scratch area on the front. Validation data cannot be obtained from the number on the back of the ticket.

If you thought you found a security flaw in MN scratch offs, why wouldn't you contact the MN lottery with your concerns? Or why wouldn't you keep it to yourself and discreetly profit?

Roping in strangers on a public forum to join in fraud is what law enforcement agents do when they're running a sting operation. Best of luck to you officer, hope you get a nice big raise.

I'm going to need some proof here.

Not that I don't believe you, but sure sounds iffy when you are sending back 5 bar codes per ticket which I'm supposed to scan. Visit a MN lottery retailer, let them know you want to see the backs of some tickets before you buy them. Sometimes the tickets are placed below the counter, etc. You can hand them your mobile phone to take pictures of a few tickets.
