I offered my internet advice, and then simply pointed out that there's a better option than choosing between differing advice found on the internet.

Here are a couple of useful tips on using lawyers in the unlikely event you win enough.

Even with the help of really good advisors stupid people are going to have more problems than smart people. No matter how positive you are that you've got a really good lawyer, giving them unsigned ticket is absolute proof that you're one of the stupid people.

And that's why I cringe every I time read the winner should do this, the winner should do that . If the winner does not have a lawyer, they should know a friend or a relative that can recommend a good one. If that doesn't work, just sign the back of the ticket, take it lottery headquarters, get it validated, and then look for legal help. Granted in most states that may take away any chance of claiming anonymous, but it sure beats hiring and giving an unsigned to Mike Aveniatti for safe keeping.... [ More ]

Better yet, if you can trust an attorney with your sister after midnight,in a dark alley or cul de sac- that's the one you should hire.

A lot of politicians may be attorneys but they are not serving as legal counsel concurrently. Paralegals may provide limited support but they do not provide legal advice or opinions.

There is no legitimate comparison between politicians and attorneys.

(USA-centric viewpoint ahead from somebody well versed in the legal field thanks to several chatty relatives that are attorneys or paralegals that do all the footwork for their attorney. Eek. Run away. haha)

The obvious and first counter argument is that 43% of the US Congress are attorneys per the search I just did. No other nation appears to be anywhere close to that.

Besides signing documents as stated above, I would videotape me handing over the ticket and stating clearly the reason for the handover. The ticket would of course be signed by me.

That is why one does their due diligence. There are ethics and rules of conduct in place for attorneys. So you go to a name firm and a well established firm. There is no legitimate comparison between politicians and attorneys. No major firm will allow their name to be ruined by a rogue attorney. I don't think some people are aware of how you interact with attorneys and the written documents in place.

One, you do your due diligence and choose one with that type of expertise. If you choose your cousin who handles immigration issues in a strip mall, that is not a wise decision.

Two, you will have a written agreement to retain his/her services and the nature of those services. This would be a private document. You would give your counsel a limited written power of attorney to claim and deposit the money.
