I know that's an option. However, up north I was renting rooms. I always struggled with money and never got to the point where I could afford an apartment. I always had to put up with less than ideal living arrangements and difficult people. So I am releshing the space and privacy I craved for so many years. I am not interested in renting to anybody. I worry about getting the wrong types in here. I'd be more interested in renting the house out to film crews for commercials or scenes for a movie.... [ More ]

Can you turn the house into a VRBO or Air BnB rental? Maybe that would get you enough $$$ monthly to go back north? Even as a regular rental on an annual basis I would suspect you could get $1400-$1500 per month if it's a 3 bedroom/2bath.

Well, I'm a December baby, so I don't mind cold weather. I prefer THAT to feeling too hot, sticky and humid all the time. I m only 57 and not ready to start acting like an old person yet. Cold weather, you can always throw on an extra sweater, and it's easier to sleep at night. Considering that there are only 10-12 MM and PB jackpot winners each year, the odds of any of us personally knowing a winner are pretty slim. Somebody won a major jackpot about 25 miles from where I reside and I never heard of them.

To what I understand, Lou lived across the street from me, but I had never seen him.

On the other hand... one evening on the way home from work (in NJ) I stopped in Staten Island to buy lottery tickets for that evening's drawing. As I am exiting the store, Curtis Sharp (wearing his Bowler hat) was entering.

@NobodySpecial - something similar happened again in 2012 in the Fantasy 5. The number drawn were 1-3-5-7-9 and there were 98 winners. Each walked away with $1,995.

With regard to the topic question, the only person I have personally known to hit a jackpot prize was a former classmate in graduate school. He won the $500 a week for life prize on a $1 scratch-off ticket. Since he was only 32 years old, he wisely chose to take the life annuity.

I m not so much content with Florida as seeing it as the only thing that makes sense. Going back to expensive NY - where I was still renting rooms at my age - doesn't make sense. I was left the house by my mother's will when she passed, so I'm staying put for a while. Until i can figure out some kind of home business and how to increase my income so I don't have to work for Walmart, I really don't have a choice. I was living with my parents down here in Florida (Port Charlotte) during the early 90s. There's a pretty good chance that we'll know that somebody is well off, but if they're good at keeping secrets (or good at lying) why should we know how come they're well off? I lived in willamina Oregon when the local grocery store sold a winning Oregon Megabucks ticket for $5.4 million the corner store. The winner took the annuity he was farely young like in his early forties. I personally did not know the fellow and one of my best friends sister won $50,000 on a casino progressive for bingo she bought herself a new car after the taxes and she needed it too.-weshar75

I worked in a building that employed over 3000 people, many of them played lottery games, a few won jackpots under $100,000 and four people won over $1 million. I worked with three of them and the fourth was an acquaintance. Two of them split a $20 million jackpot, retired on Monday and never worked there again. Yes, people attempt to keep a low profile if they win, but if any of us knew of a friend or associate who won the big jackpot, we'd find out. It seems that nobody knows anyone who's won. I realize it's rare to win, so chances are we wouldn't know anyone, but without knowing any winners, we are all playing under the foolish assumption that we actually have even the remotest chance of winning. If the jackpots for the big games are fixed, there is certainly reason to think some of the other games could be fixed, too. You don't live in NY, so I won't go into detail, other than to say the process for at least one of the NY games is far from transparent, with no way to even remotely verify if there was in fact a winner, even if if the lottery's website stated that there was.

I know some people but the max was $100k. A coworker won 10k from a scratcher while we were at lunch and an ex girlfriend dad won 10k from a scratcher too. Other than that only on TV and the show on HGTV or something like that about lottery winners buying homes. I won $500 dollars like 3 times and I m not a big gambler. There must be a reason as to why winners do not want the publicity. They come out to collect their prize but disappear soon afterwards. Flashing their cash is not a wise thing for them to do.

The games are fixed in that the odds against winning a jackpot are enormous. Just as the lottery organizers plan.

Hi - I know the odds are stacked tremendously against us and I know the games could be fixed so that our numbers never come in. I have been playing Take Five, Mega Millions, Powerball, Cash 4 Life, Pick Ten. Does someone know anyone who won the jackpot in any of these games? Last September, a guy who lives in my building won the scratch-off $10,000 a Week For Life jackpot. Other than that, I don't know of anyone.
