You need to face your fears, tackle your demons head on.Just pop in the movie Good Will Hunting. View the entire thing do the opposite before Will sees the light. Everything should be fine from that point on. You don't need therapy, you need the movie.

I would hire a therapist/advisor so the money does not screw up family members that would not know what to do with sudden wealth.

Interesting question, and one I hadn't considered. off the cuff I would say nope; but until the reality of a jackpot win is my burden to bear, I suppose I just won't know what all therapy I might consider useful. But now? Today? nope - not on the horizon. although I suggest therapy to alot of different people for differing reasons almost daily...

Therapist may be up to their eyeballs in debt and still paying off student loans. Wonder what they would ACTUALLY be thinking about a jackpot lottery winner obsessing over which charities are most worthy . . which is probably none.

Not a question I'd ask of anyone unless they had personal knowledge of therapy, counseling or the like. Or at least you need more specifics since not all therapy involves psychotropic drugs, while psychiatry and psychology are different type therapist.

Without knowledge of particulars people get a negative connotation of what counseling is and why you are seeing a therapist. Not everyone is seeing a therapist for mental illness, some seek behavioral modification, others want a sounding boa... [ More ]

I truly believe the best therapy is a bit of trial/error and constant recalibration one's moral compass

Just moving is a culture shock to some people. Winning would be much more than that.

There is the American society that says, I will not be caught dead in a therapy session.

There are plenty of past winners who needed the help but did not know it at the time.

What harm would there be in paying for one hour of the Psychiatrist's time. Or a psychotherapist.

Science is discovering new things about our brains.

I think at least one of the articles I've seen about things to do or expect after winning suggested the possibility of seeing a therapist.

Leads me to wonder about one's mental stability after the fact.

I think a lot depends on who you are before you win because after you win you're going to be the same you with more money. More money will solve some problems, but it can also accentuate things.

It would have to be case by case, person by person.

There are the Jack Whitakers (who was already a millionaire before winning a jackpot) and the late David Lee Edwards, then then there' the guy in Idaho who won and bought a gym.

As far as going to a therapist, some people here on LP should think about it......I'm referring tp those who claim jackpots before the drawing, this one is mine , When I win tonight , etc...ad nauseam.

Do you think you would hire a therapist after winning a big jackpot? (Mega Million or Powerball)

I'm curious because there has to be some kind of psychological change that takes affect. We all fantasize about the things we would buy. But the fact that the change in one's lifestyle would happen instantly as opposed to years of hard-work. Leads me to wonder about one's mental stability after the fact.
