correct, but they still played the game and COULD have hit the jackpot but it appears they never did. It also appears the other groups didn't either, or at least they didn't say they hit.

They only played when the jackpot had not hit and the money was rolled down to the smaller prizes. That would increase the amounts of the smaller prizes. They played enough tickets to guarantee many wins of the smaller prizes.

Great article and then fun to watch the 60 min interview. Seemed like normal people that were part of there 'group'. So if I understand right them and the other groups (in MA) bought all these tickets and STILL never hit the jackpot

That is because the lottery itself is a business aimed at making maximum profits. If the same person ever wins the Powerball jackpot more than once or if the same person ever wins the Mega Millions jackpot more than once, there will be significant and massive changes to that game. Those games will still be around but the lottery would make it even harder to win those games.

The lottery was making more money, but shut the game down because groups were tying up lottery terminals and had what they called unfair advantage over the average player by lowering the roll-over payoffs. The Mass Lottery was actually making more in profits.

Kind of sounds like that passage in Catch22 when the one guy (Milo Minderbinder?) started doing business in the black market but sold everything at a loss. When Yossarian asked him how he was going to make any money like that he said, Oh, I'll make up fir it in volume.

It said in the article I read that Mass Lottery made about 120 million on the Cash Winfall game, so they were pretty happy too. Between the Selbee group and the MIT kids, they were selling millions of dollars in tix that ordinarily wouldn't been sold.

I'm almost 100% certain it's a repeat. If it is them, they did the same thing the MIT students did in the Mass. lottery game that was shut down. Curious how they're showing it again right after a couple of big MM and PB jackpots were won.

Just googled it. It's about the couple playing Winfall, after figuring out the odds were in the player's favor when there was a rolldown. Then when Michigan ended the game, they did the same thing in Massachusetts at the same time some kids from MIT were doing the same thing.
