I really like this idea a whole lot!! PLUS, people seem to forget that you can be somewhat anonymous by forming a trust before you claim your winnings through an attorney, then claim the winning AFTER the trust is setup, choose a name like you would for a business and thats it. You're anonymous

The lottery is public domain, and most lotteries, like here in New York, will publish your entire name and the town where you live, making even worse and winners subject to all kinds of harassment, threats and dangerous liaisons. Thats why I prefer to play games like Pick 10, if you win a jackpot, no name, just the store where the winning ticket was sold. I could win the Pick 10 20 times and no name of location published about the winner

If I won a big lottery, I would hire a lawyer and a personal security expert before coming forward. I play by subscription in Illinois so I would hope they don t make my name public until I come forward.

I have a fairly unusual last name - so much so that other kids would make fun of it, alter it a bit, and when we'd play away games in football, the announcers would mangle the name, too. Even so, there are quite a few in the U.S. with my last name, several of other races. (men, not just women taking their husband's name) And, get this - I live in a small town in the TX Panhandle, but there's another guy in Amarillo that has the exact same full name, plus another in Denton, TX.

I suppose so, but even if someone knew your name and wanted to try to rob you or find you in order to attempt to bilk you out of your money, they can't do that if they can't find you. I still do not understand why anyone thinks lying low or getting outta Dodge until the dust settles would be such a major inconvenience. Since 2003 there has been 187 Powerball Jackpot winners (more than $10 Million).

Since 2002 there has been 183 MegaMillion Jackpot winners (more than $12 million).

Mike, this is where having a common name like Michael Smith would come in handy. A name like Abraham Shakespeare would kind of be unique, but there are millions of people in the U.S. with the name Michael Smith so it would be hard to know exactly which Michael Smith won say The Powerball since it is a multistate game.

As I explained about his particular case, he had been sued for part of his winnings by a co-worker so even if he had been able to claim anonymously, his identity was made public by the lawsuit. He also wasn't forced to go public ; Florida does not require a winner do a press conference. From the Florida Lottery FAQ:

Florida law mandates that the Florida Lottery provide the winner's name, city of residence, game won, date won and amount won to any third party who requests the information; h... [ More ]

Not really a bad idea Karen but I'll tweak it and bring up something I've mentioned before

The Jackpot Winners Protection Program

(Some lawyers should really do this)

In states where winners can't be anonymous other people (lawyers?) represent the winner at any necessary press conference etc.....they also shelter the winner as far as solicitations, news people and others go.

Kind of a jackpot winners' version of the Witness Protection Program.

Give you an A for effort on the idea Karen. One slight problem, if the lottery is posing Fake winners and deceiving the general public, it generates a trust issue. Lotteries are required to be honest in nature. It wouldn't be very ethical for them to lie about a winner under the guise of who was the real winner. I have never liked the fact that 43 States make Lottery Winners come forward in Public in order to claim their winnings. At least three Lottery Winners were murdered for their winnings after coming forward in Public, most likely a Public Press Conference with their wins.
