Sunday midnight to Monday midnight. About a week before the event add a sort of countdown

timer to the main page reminding people. Any day works for me as long as I know in advance.

Well, I'm hearing Sunday loud and clear. I'm thinking that it might be best to get started after the 10:00 am Eastern Time cutoff for all states picks.

Of course, this does not mean tomorrow, but I will provide lots of notice about which Sunday we will have the maintenance.

No worries, my background includes consulting on database systems, both transactional systems and data warehouses, so it's well covered. Traffic numbers do not really help with what date and time to take the predictions system offline, because if I were to base it on traffic numbers, I would take it offline on Monday (the lowest traffic day). That would be fairly bad for people wanting to use the predictions system.

Todd, traffic numbers are the best way to determine least impact to users. Happens all the time in business when that business cannot afford to have two database systems standing at the same time (think all the Oracle or MSSQL licensing costs, etc).

Let's say a company needs to update their ERP or PLM system, and they can afford to have two systems standing at the same time. They set up the new system, do in depth use case testing, train the users, then roll out the new system. The old system... [ More ]

Sunday, absolutely.

You can take her down Saturday about midnight until early morning 5:00 or 6:00 AM Monday morning.

That should give you the time to do it with least impact I think.

I doubt this will make anybody happy, but I would vote for Friday night. The reason is that, in your worst-case scenario, the system is down a day. Even if it's down a full day+, it would definitely be back up on Sunday when folks are likely to be looking at the next week's predictions.

I'd suggest Sunday, since only Fantasy 5, and 3, 4-pick type games would be affected, not a Major game's day.. IMO

I do want to actually know what days works best for the members here, rather than picking a day based on traffic numbers. The reason is that the bulk of traffic numbers are largely dictated by people who never post a single prediction, so I would much rather pick a day based on what day people posting here tell me.

Even knowing the time of day that works best for you would be interesting, because if it has to go offline for less than one day, I need to pick a time to do it. Best to pick a tim... [ More ]

I thought it would be a good idea to begin a dialog about some work that I'll be needing to do on the predictions system over the next few months, because at some point the predictions system will need to be brought offline temporarily to make some changes that I'll discuss below.
