The grocery store manager asked me nice to not do this again, as it took hours. What I learned.. If the machine runs out of paper this will mess you up. Make sure They have enough paper in the machine to print the slip you give them. Feed the clerk play slips, do not just hand them a stack thats asking for trouble if something goes wrong with the machine like running out of p... [ More ]

I remember a long time ago I had a $500 winner and I went to a Super America (gas station) to cash it - only one person working there since it was late at night.

I asked if they could cash it, they said sure! I gave them the ticket, they scanned it, and then from their safe door under the counter watched a check print out. Looked like a money order, but it listed Super America as the payer.

Utterly confused as hell I asked what's up and she said oh we do not have that much cash to give you... [ More ]

Common sense, why keep excess money in the store when it's not needed.

True, but why go the bank every hour or two? A lot of small places have a drop safe, which is a safe that you can drop money into without opening it. A shift supervisor probably has access to a change safe that has a bit extra, but typically it's only a manager that has access to the drop safe. It's fairly uncommon for somebody to use a fifty or hundred to pay for small purchases and you're constantly collecting new cash,... [ More ]

rcbbuckeye, convenience stores can and do ,at times, need more money than what they keep in their registers. I've had one store tell me that they only had $25 when I tried to cash a $500 winning ticket. So, if that was true that he only had $25 then how is he supposed to conduct business if he ,for example, needed to break a hundred dollar bill. He would have to tell the customer that he didn't have the money or change and I don't see that happening. It's bad for business for stores to keep too... [ More ]

The store I buy my tix does have cash in the back office, but not hundreds of dollars. If they get robbed they want to limit their loss.

Common sense, why keep excess money in the store when it's not needed. Paying the occasional lottery winner is not a high priority in lieu of security. The little c-store did cash a $67 the other day. That's not unusual. But $500? I don't blame them for not having that much, and even if they did, it would probably clean out what cash they did have.

To... [ More ]

Think stores that already sell money orders, like for people who need one to pay a bill and can't send cash. If they can take $999 for someone to pay their rent, they can accept a winning lottery ticket as payment for a money order. Only problem is money orders cost I believe a percentage of the amount or have a flat rate based on hundreds, so a winner may be asked to pay the money order fee.

BobP

I've been going to the same C-store for years. Owners are very friendly. Years ago I won a few hundred dollars and she didn't have the cash on hand and told me to come back in a few hours. I did and she paid me. Little private C-stores generally don't keep a lot of cash on hand for security purposes. So if I have a bigger winning ticket I just go to the Tom Thumb store to cash it. But most times I still buy my tix at the little C-store.

Likely every lottery is different, I believe retailers make pennies per ticket. They are sold on the idea offering lottery tickets will bring in paying customers. Your two ticket purchase worth less then ten cents takes the same time as it takes to ring up something worth selling. It isn't your fault and it won't be the last time I buy the loss leader and nothing else either, but if I want to rely on the good will of the store owner it wouldn't hurt to occasionally throw a bone their way.

I've had no problem with getting a lot of tickets at different stores. The only problem I've had ,so far, is in cashing my winning tickets because the stores don't have enough money or ,perhaps, they're just lying about not having enough money. One store told me two different times that they don't have the money and the first time they ,supposedly, only had $25. I've had to go longer distances to find stores so that I can cash all my $500 winning tickets.

There are always a few clerks that act like they don't want to sell tickets. You're only buying two tickets a day, it's not like you're buying 50 or 100 numbers at a time. If he's going to give you an attitude over that, then just go someplace else.
