If you can get to a lottery retailer anywhere than you have an equal chance of winning. Online purchases are the future for most and still a reality for some.

There are some excellent posts in this thread and I think the correct answer to the original posters question is spread across all of those excellent posts.

Just to add a little more to what's been said above; IMHO I think it's simply all about the population of the states, the number of tickets sold in each state and the coverage of all 292 million possible combinations. (in PB)

It depends on how many grand prize winners there are each year and in the last year combined, PB and MM had only about 13 jackpot winners. And with 47 jurisdictions playing PB and MM, only about 1/3 of them could have a jackpot winner.

A recent thread in the Jackpot forum listed PB winners by state. I don't know for sure that it's accurate and complete from the beginning of the game (it seems close enough), but it says that CA and NY account for 5.2% of winners. New York New jersey and California have the most players because of their population of eligible players but they do not win all the time it just seems like they do. My state has 5 powerball winners and no mega millions winners but we get million dollar winners in mega millions so it is a matter of time before we break through. Any ways do not stop playing though because you never know when it is your time to win.-weshar75

Most don't come from either CA or NY, but many more come from those two states than from, say, Wyoming or South Dakota.

CA and NY have a combined population of about 59 million. The US has a total population of about 331 million. So about 17.8% of all US residents live in either CA or NY. If you assume lottery playing habits are uniform across the country, you can then very roughly estimate that about 17.8% of winners will be from those two states.

NC has at times, or s it seem (sometimes)many winner's too, in certain games, but not regularly like the state or states you're citing.

and yep,

i've noticed since living here, by the folks for five yrs just about.

my home state? smh california, yea... so many. imo it almost feel unreal at times, how many it seem always win in these three states.

I've always query into the most it seem are out of:

-NYC

-CALI

-NJ
