Ah, this explains it...... The specific question to look for on the FAQ page there is Why is the cash option always a different percentage of the annuity from draw to draw?

There is no extra to go anywhere. The lotteries buy the annuity for the cash they have, and the annuity pays out a fixed amount that both parties have agreed to.

Actually, I was referring to the text on USA Mega that deals with how the cash and annuity amounts are determined, not the annuity payout formula.

The specific question to look for on the FAQ page there is Why is the cash option always a different percentage of the annuity from draw to draw?

Once you have a handle on how they determine jackpot amounts (cash vs. annuity), it makes more sense as to why comparing amounts between games -- or even between drawings of the same game -- doesn't... [ More ]

What Todd and USA Mega said pertaining to the lump sum being the real cash value, and the following from the MM and PB websites:

Mega Millions: The Mega Millions annuity is paid out as one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments (30 total). Each payment is 5% bigger than the previous one.
