Well according to this - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powerball#Secondary_prizes

(Section 3.6, Secondary prizes)

It looks like my guess was absolutely correct for PowerBall. I have yet to find anything that clear for Mega Millions.

I doubt that states get to set their own limits, but I haven't seen anything in the rules that makes it clear. All prizes are administered by the individual states, but they're all paid from a prize pool funded by all members, except for CA.

If each state was responsible for paying the full cost of the 5+0 prize a lot of states with small populations wouldn't take the risk. For the $750 million MM jackpot sales in VT, WY, and the USVI were $341k, $256k, and $65k respectively. I don't have the... [ More ]

Hmmm....there probably are limits on the lower prizes but I doubt the limits are PB and MM wide. I would guess that each state sets its own limits on the payouts cept California which is already pari-mutuel

BTW there was a player awhile back in Michigan who hit 5 Second prizes on the Mega Mil and Michigan paid out all 5

There's a limit on how much will be paid out for all winning tickets regardless of who owns them, not a limit on how much one player can win.

The only way that a single player would miss out would be if the lottery chose not to exceed their liability limit because one particular player won a disproportionate number of the prizes. When 110 people won the 5+0 PB prize by playing numbers from fortune cookies in 2005 the resulting payout exceeded the liability limit, but MUSL decided to suck it u... [ More ]

The topic is about real winners and asking if there are liability limit on MM and PB $1 million secondary prizes in Texas. I'm pretty sure every state lottery placed limits on how much they pay out similar to pick-3 liability limits.

I would think that someone in that situation would merely give tickets to their Friends and Family to claim for Themselves, and hope that they don't steal the Millions Themselves. In fact, on Lottery Scandals, an Illegal Immigrant gave his American Citizen , Friend his multi million dollar win ticket to claim for him fearing he'd be denied his winnings if he went to claim it himself.. The American Citizen Friend, tried to keep the winnings for himself! Luckily, the Illegal Immigrant took the cha... [ More ]

Took a while to find the TX legal code regarding lottery administration as it's not on the TX lotto website. Go here:

https://texreg.sos.state.tx.us/public/readtac$ext.ViewTAC?tac_view=5 ti=16 pt=9 ch=401 sch=D rl=Y

Wade through the administrative codes for MM and PB and you'll find the official rules regarding liability limits for non-jackpot prizes.

Yes there is a limit, if the reserve pools are exhausted the set prizes will convert to pari-mutuel.

For example, in Powerball the pari-mutuel will be triggered if both the reserve pool for set-prizes (max $40m) and the reserve pool for starting JP ($20m) are drained by set prizes.

This doesn't just apply to the first non-jackpot tier either. If you hit a zillion lower prizes it would effect too.

Don't know of a liability cap on PB or MM. I do know that the liability limit for Tx AoN is $5 million. That would be 20 winning top prize tickets. The only way I see that happening is if all even or all odd, or the first 12, or last 12 numbers are drawn.

You might consider buy multiple tix with the same numbers but megaply. If you buy 16 tix at $3 each, your cost is $48, and the megaplier is just 2, you win $32 million. If the megaplier is 5, you win $80 million.

Odds are over 1 in 13 mil... [ More ]

Does anyone know if there is a limit?

I know that in Texas, All Or Nothing is capped at 2.5mill. havent seen anything on the other Texas games.

But what about Megamillion without the megaball or Powerball without the powerball.

what happens if instead of spending 50 dollars on 25 quick picks, you buy 25 identical tickets and hit the non-jackpot prize with 5 matching numbers. that's 25 million that you win.

I would presume that even if there is a liability cap, you have 25 of, lets sa... [ More ]
