There are not very many choices if you using high/low and even/odd together. For instance in your example 438 that is even/low, odd/low, and even/high and only two chances for the first digit to repeat against eight chances to not repeat and the other 2 digits have three for and seven against. With only 17 other straight combos out of 1000 in the pattern, it's not a very strong filter.
