Just like the lottery doesn't care which game funnels our money to them I don't think they care which game requires them to process a claim. After all, every claim they process means that they also sold a couple of dozen or more losing tickets and skimmed 50% off the top.

The lotteries are only interested in maximizing their profit. I think that makes the OP's idea completely unworkable.

Determining the winner of a 1 million prize once a week would be a nightmare at best.

Every day would have to be from a different pool of all the players based on daily sales I suppose and eligibility would probably be only for the day the ticket was purchased. Nice idea just too complicated to implement.

There's nothing wrong with the OP's basic premise (or yours), in that players as a whole would be better off if $50 or $100 million of annual jackpot prize money went to 50 or 100 otherwise losing players instead of to the few people who would still win the jackpots. Megamillions should counter Powerball's move by increasing the number of megaballs to make the jackpot harder to win, and decreasing the number of white balls to make it easier to win the million dollar prize. The frenzy created by the higher jackpots would more than pay for an extra 50 million dollar prizes each year - and probably even more.

I like raffles too - some of the ones around where I am have very good odds for the money you are spending to enter.

If this raffle you talked about existed I would play for sure - depending on the entry price point - but I don't think it is likely.

The next best thing I have to play for a million each day is my WI SuperCash - play multiple lines of the same numbers - each $1 gets me a shot at a $700,000 ($350,000 per number panel) cash jackpot and I usually buy a couple sets of my numbers... [ More ]

Big ticket sales occur because of the presence of a monster jackpot, like the current $396 million Mega Millions jackpot. A $1 million prize that someone has a very difficult time winning is not going to generate the same level of sales as that $396 million jackpot. Like I said, it's all been tried before.

I'm not an expert, but each week, each of the big lottery games add 7 to 15 million to the pot. So seems like there's way more than a million per day in ticket sales. I suppose also that if more sales would occur if they knew their number would be in the pot to draw from.

I appreciate you mentioning raffle , yes that's what it is. Seems better than the big wins of hundreds of millions to one person. More people's lives could be positively transformed?

What you're describing is a raffle. The lotteries have tried doing raffles many times, and they have been only partically successful. There are just a handful of states that still do raffles, but only once or twice per year. There definitely would not be enough in terms of sales volume in order to deliver a $1 million prize daily. It takes most states a month or two of sales in order to award $1 million prizes in a raffle. There just isn't enough demand for it.

Lower the first price and spread the money over the other ranks? Also make the price of a combination cheaper? Not 2.5 for Euromillions but just 1 and 0.50? Games not combined to another game like joker or a random number in the price, on the ticket. Maybe readable forms too, without drawings and such on the forms. ... But, who wouldn't like a billion USD's from MegaMillions

Let people win $1 million per day. Only the numbers selected by people, are entered into a pool, and one set of numbers randomly selected each day to win $1 million. It's not good waiting weeks or months waiting for one person to win a couple hundred million. With $1 million, in today's high cost of living, this would spark optimism, and transform opportunity, and build the economy in ways unseen before?
