In PA, there are numerical codes only, but it's not clear what they mean, if anything.

All scratch offs contain a QR code that can be scanned at digital lottery machines to either check or redeem, scanned via the PA Lottery app, or the small ticket checker at the counters of lottery retailers. These codes can tell whether a ticket is a winner. It is my firm belief that since if the code is damaged, it asks for the game number, the book number, and the ticket number that they essentially know... [ More ]

Always scan your ticket. One time I saw a guy downtown buying $20 after $20 ticket, checking the 'three letters' whatever they are mny, tpl, Paz, twn, and not even scratching the actual ticket with the numbers or anything, and just throwing them away. I looked at him, and said what are you doing? You don't know if that's a winner or not. You're not even checking the ticket. He said, no I'm checking. The three letters at the bottom. I said, man, first of all a jackpot ticket will not say jackpot,... [ More ]

No prob...here's an article that goes into further detail. It's from awhile ago and many links contained therein appear to be dead now, but it's pertinent nonetheless. I'm not sure if TX still releases jackpot book #s, but I sure wish FL would, lol.

https://www.inquirer.com/philly/news/nation_world/Mystery_of_lottery_legend_Joan_Ginther_yields_clues_to_finding_75_million_prize.html

Hi B!g, glad to have helped. Referencing book numbers for the purpose of trying to align with a top prize is far from certain. It's pretty apparent that here in FL, like many lotteries, top prizes are spread evenly through a game's run, so there generally remains an incentive to play active games (esp since FL posts remaining prizes at all $ levels). For example, if a new game comes out with 5 top prizes among a million books, the top prizes should generally be spread evenly throughout, like per... [ More ]

So my next question is, are the top prize winners in the first groups of books, and then they're distributed at random times throughout the life of the game? or could they be in any book, 1st, last, or anywhere in between?

Thank you

Wow, very interesting. Thanks Cape!

The ticket book # information really caught my attention. I'd imagine that's it.. I'd love to learn more about the additional complications to this .. If you have the time, I'd love to hear it, but thank you for your time and the great information.

-B!g

Hey B!g, welcome to the Boards here!

I'm only familiar with Florida scratch-offs but might still have some useful info. btw FL used to have the lettering codes you refer to (for $500 and below wins) but phased them out...the only existing here that still has them is the $2 Gold Rush (which is scheduled to end in Feb '22 after a 7-year run).

Here's my thoughts on your question if folks are studying a ticket before scratching it any. They could be:

Simply be not familiar with the game an... [ More ]

Hi All,

I play the lottery regularly, but tend to gravitate towards scratch-offs more than other games. I usually check prizes using the lottery codes (for example TEN, TWY, TRY are codes for Virginia scratch-offs), or using the state's lottery app if they don't use codes. But sometimes while playing, in states where hidden codes are NOT on the scratch-offs, I sometimes notice guys examining the barcodes (or something) on the scratch-off, and this is even before they actually scratch the tick... [ More ]
