Yep.

With all the ways the state lotteries and lottery sites have to check results, why would anyone go into any old store and hand their ticket to someone they never saw before?

Don't most players that frequently buy tickets buy and cash them in stores they trust

Lottery Post shows daily results within minutes of the drawing, if you don't thing the scanners are legit .

The Ohio lottery had ticket scanners at least 25 years ago as did Michigan, WVA, Florida and New Jersey. And before that most lottery players had enough sense to check the results and sign the back of the ticket before handing to a store clerk.

Be careful. If you rely on the scanner machines as being correct instead of doing your due diligence, by checking your numbers in the LotteryPost database AND the SL Database, then well, you should be well aware of the potential downside...

A crooked lottery thief can be fixed with a loud voice, agressive temper, some mild threats of violence and a broken bottle, but a DS scanner thief is ghost,a ghost in the machine.

Posters on the YouTube videos were saying stuff like, When Chris Hansen did these episodes, Self scanning machines didn't exist yet. I shudder to think how many Winners had their Lottery Winnings stolen from them by shady Lottery Retailers before the self scanning machines were implemented.

That episode of Dateline NBC aired ten years ago today. I believe there was LP News item about it too. And ticket scanners were in every store long before that and so were state lottery sites and Lottery Post. You may be confusing players too lazy to check their tickets.

At least in Texas it's impossible for a clerk to steal when checking a ticket. If it's a winning ticket the terminal sounds a da-da-daaaa chime. (or something like that). And even when the customer scans their own ticket, I still have to scan it to process the prize (assuming I can pay it).

WAY too many crooked Lottery Clerks were stealing money from Winners before the self scanner machines were implemented.
