The Powerball second place prize was finally won in California. The prize reached $6 million for the June 1 draw and was won with one ticket.

The Mega Millions prize is continuing to roll and is a record $7.1 million for the June 7 draw.

I should have added to my above post that I do not recommend that players do what I did.

When I first did it, I laughed to myself thinking that if I matched the first five numbers I'd probably end up being very glad that I won and had done what I had done. With a little more thought, I realized there's a big downside to doing it.

If I bought one line with the PowerPlay and won 2 million, I might be able to collect it without much public/media fanfare. But if I won $10 million by playing... [ More ]

Not that It will do anyone in California any good, but there is a way for players in other states to make any PowerBall drawing pay a second place prize of 10 million dollars. (But that's a definite maybe - read on)

If you play the same line five times (that'll cost you $10) and add the PowerPlay (that'll make your ticket cost$15) and you match the first five numbers, then your prize would be $10,000,000. ($2 million per line)

Granted that's crazy not to mention it's a very expensive ticke... [ More ]

Update 5/3/2022: Now it's $5,940,073 . For Friday's drawing it should definitely be more than $6 million.

I prefer parimutuel odds here in CA. Alot of times it's below the fixed amount of other states and other times it's way above the fixed amount of other states.

The second prize must have rolled for close to a year to reach $7.6 million.

In California the 2nd place prizes of both Powerball and Mega Millions are rolling mini-jackpots, that's what allows them to get pretty high sometimes. They roll independently of the main jackpot, which is a pretty unique feature. Currently the Mega Millions 2nd place prize is 5.5 million.

Of course, once somebody wins the 2nd place prize it resets to a very low amount. I've seen it as low as 100K. And if more than one California player wins it, they have to split it, because of it being pari... [ More ]

$7,660,254, won on August 9, 2014 by one ticket.

And, you might be interested to know that for Mega Millions, California is currently setting the record for the highest second-prize amount ever offered in the state for the game. In the last drawing it was valued at $5,545,130.

The Powerball prizes in California are parimutuel unlike any other state that offers the Powerball game. In the last Powerball draw, the second place prize in California was $3.6 million as opposed to a fixed $1 million in all other states.

I am curious to know what was the highest ever prize in California for the second place category. Anyone know the answer
