Several years ago I took a business trip that gave me a chance to play in 3 states. The trip was to Idaho, so I bought tickets there before leaving. When I changed planes in Denver, I bought tickets for the Colorado lottery, then when I got home to Louisiana, bought tickets here.

Didn't have any winners, but it was fun to try.

PA has a single tax bracket of just over 3%, which is the lowest of any state that taxes lottery winnings. If you're going to be in PA anyway buy all of your tickets there, and on the off chance you win you can become a PA resident before claiming the prize.

I KNEW it was easy to find - which means I had no hope of finding it myself

Here is what I found -

Whether it's income from a job or income from gambling, the state where the money is won will tax the prize first at their out-of-state tax rate (assuming the state taxes lottery winnings). If your state of residence has the same or lower tax rate, then you won't owe anything else. So i am traveling thru a couple different states today. I was thinking I should pick up a ticket in each state for the MM jackpot. But then thought I might have to pay state tax in the states I dont live in??

I am in Maryland and will be hitting VA, Delaware PA today.
