I get what you're saying, but I also think the simplest way to get over this annoyance is to just not play until the jackpot is $X million dollars, for whatever value of X makes you feel that it's worth playing. If X = 40 for you, it only takes a couple of drawings for the starting value of $20 million to roll over to $40 million. So you'd just have to skip a few drawings.

Not sure if you caught this video when it came out in March, but it should give you some insight into this issue. The video headline is about game changes, but a big portion was devoted to discussion of the starting jackpot amount. The interview is with the head of the Mega Millions group, so there is no more definitive information about it than this.

On March 25, 2020 they said due to Covid19 they had to roll back from $40 starting price to $20 million due to 'interest rate and ticket sales

BUT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO ROLL BACK THE PRICE INCREASE OF A $1 AMOUNT ON EACH TICKET SALES. THE TICKET PRICE REMAINS THE SAME $2 ( So they think consumers can afford to give extra $1 at the time of Covid 19 and when unemployment number went through the roof? )
