The lotteries in the U.S. are mostly state agencies with rules and regulations determined by state legislators. The jackpots are the only MM and PB prizes that are the same in each jurisdiction and each state regulates things like anonymity, state and local taxes and .

Only the Western Australia State Lottery is still run by the State. All other Australian States have have sold off the management of their state lotteries. The New South Wales Labor Party opposed the sale of NSW Lotteries in opposition. But, when they got into government, they sold it off.

Many other countries including Australia and the UK have national lotteries and because we have multi state lottery games, some believe we have a national lottery too. To add to the confusion, eight states offer Online ticket purchases as well as other games like Keno and Cash Pop, but players must be inside state borders to play. Oh heavens. No need to apologize. She's been gone a little over 2 years, and time does heal. I'm still healing, but of course I think of her every day.

Her/our experience really opened my eyes to how the medical industry works. In short, I get offended by all the drug ads, doctor ads, hospital ads, etc, on tv and internet too. They talk about all the wonderful things they can do, but in reality, it's all about the money. Medical costs is way too expensive.

Yeah. I can relate some to American medical industry (yes industry) when my wife got Leukemia.

Racked up about $2 million in various dr, hospital, tests, etc., claims on insurance.

I'll be the first to say America is not all great. There was a time, yeah. But that time has passed.

America is the only first world country without socialized health care; without health considered a human right. In America, health care is a consumer product. You pay insurance, doctors use it to indemnify themselves, and then you pay the doctor, on top of the insurance.

Geez. Well this thread got sideways quickly.

Just to clear up misconceptions. I wasn't trying to be contentious, but I can see how my response to danny could be perceived as such. I get a little prickly when I feel like we (Americans) are looked down as a backward country and not keeping up with what other countries are doing. If Aussies are happy with how they get their winnings, great. That's all that matters. It doesn't matter to me.

Just to be clear (since it was brought up), I do care what happens in other countries, and you'll notice our news section contains a rather large percentage of stories that are about other countries. It's important to keep an eye on what happens with regard to the lottery in every country (not just the USA) because we all have to learn from each other what works and what doesn't.

I believe at some point in the future we will evolve to a cashless society. When? I don't know. How? Don't know that either.

Back in the 70's and 80's, (and 90's? LOL, not sure) I paid all my bills by checks, sent through the mail. Now virtually all my bills are paid online through my bank, or auto draft from my bank account or credit card account. If you live in a state with online play, your winnings are directly deposited into your lottery account up to a certain amount. My lottery account was set up with my bank debit card. If you win over that amount, the lottery electronically transfers money into your bank account but you have to fill out a claim form first, visit the lottery office for huge wins, etc.

I only write checks for charitable donations. Most people in the US are not writing checks more than using other methods.

It is amazing that checks, spelled cheques in Australia, are still a major method of payment in the US.

Finland eliminated cheques in 1993 and Dutch banks haven t accepted personal cheques since 2001. In the UK, if you pay your online National Lottery subscription by Direct Debit, all prizes up to and including 50,000 will be deposited straight into your account. Payment may take between 3-5 working days.
