I worked in the fuel center for about a year, and was surprised at the number of people that came inside to pay for gas with cash. Several people told me they didn't trust the pumps, or were afraid of skimmers that might be on the pumps.

I suspect some didn't have debit cards or credit cards also.

Many people fill up their tank and if they pay cash for their gas, take any change due them as a QP(s). I have to believe there have been many jackpots won that way. But who pays cash for gas anymore???? G5

Out of curiosity I counted how many Texas 2 Step jackpots were purchased at convenience/gas station stores as opposed to grocery stores.

I might be off a couple, but I out of 34 jackpot winners last year, 20 were purchased at convenience store/gas stations.

The reason I say off is because some grocery stores sell tickets at the customer service desk, but also have gas stations on the property that have small convenient stores that also sell lottery. So for example, it might show Albertso... [ More ]

The Illinois lottery website used to show where winning jackpot tickets were puechased for what was then Little Lotto

(but not anymore) and Lotto. There was a chain of convenience stoes in northern Illinois called the White Hen Pantry that sold a lot of wining Little Lotto jackpots. (now Luckt Day Lotto) buy I think the White Hen Pantry was sold to 711.

While the IL lottery posted such info it was really rare for a state jackpot winner to have been purchased in a grocery store.

Here in Florida it's very hard to tell if there are more gas stations than there are grocery stores. There are probably more gas stations, but whichever it is, my guess is that there are more winning tickets sold there.

If it really is gas stations then what's gonna happen in 2073 when there will be far fewer gas stations due to the huge number of electric vehicle charging stations that will be everywhere you look? I won't be here then but it's sure going to be a different world. G5... [ More ]

Clerks don't look at the tickets and decide if it is or is not a winner, they use the terminal scanner. Stores also have scanners players can use or they can use kiosk machines. If you have lots of tickets to check, don't hand them to the clerk unless you want to face the wroth of the people waiting in line.

Smart clerk isn't going to be involved. Keeps them from facing a, I had a winning ticket and after he/she checked, it's gone moment.

Saying No is a lot less painful than being suspected of stealing winning tickets, and losing your job.

Maybe pay a friend to do it?

The lottery has told us many times that 70 to 80 of winners are from quick pick tickets, and that 70 to 80% of tickets are QP. I'd expect the same thing to be true of where winning tickets were sold. If 40% of tickets are sold at gas stations then about 40% of winners will have been sold at gas stations.

As for checking tickets, most states have scanners that read the bar code (I gather that some scratch off tickets are void if the bar code is exposed, so check first), so you can check at le... [ More ]

I truly hope that people haven't become so lazy and illiterate that they can't check 5 or 6 numbers on a website, via cellphone to compare the tickets in their hand....Or better yet, wait until they get home to look on the computer.

I'm wondering how/why it would be tedious to check lottery tickets. Takes me a minute or less to check my tix on TX Lottery website. Don't bother to wait to go to the store to check on the scanner.

Ask the clerk to show you where the ticket scanner is and how to use it. You can check your own tickets in the store.

No it doesn't matter where you buy your tickets.

Ohio has phone app. Scanning tickets is easy. I always scan my tickets at home before heading to the gas station. So I know how much they add up to.

Also, if you buy a lot of tickets on a game, can the clerk go through them and tell you if any are winners? In other words, can the clerk scan the tickets for you or must you go home and go through them yourself? In fact, are there scanners there that you can use yourself? I imagine it would be a tedious task either way.
