A few years ago when I won about one hundred dollars playing 5 identical lines, when I went to cash the ticket, the guy on the other side of the counter took a hard look at my ticket before he reached in his cash drawer when he saw that I won almost $100. He said he did that because he wondered how did that happen?

Yup. I use identical strategy. 5 tickets of same numbers ($15 per draw) for both powerball and mega millions while selecting powerplay and multiplier options. Like you said, I'm aiming to match 5 not the jackpot. Especially with mega millions, and depending on the multiplier numbers, the prize can get significantly higher than powerball. I've done the same thing with PB for the last couple of years. I buy five identical lines of 5 numbers and also buy the PowerPlay. Yeah, that's $15 for what amounts to one line (15 bucks a line. How crazy is that?)

It could also be a matter of personal preference. I live in California and visit my family in Virginia every Christmas. I play only when I visit my family in Virginia because California uses RNGs and Virginia uses balls. If California starts using balls for Pick-3 and Pick-4, I will play.

Indeed. Playing multiple tickets with same numbers and hoping to max out on relatively smaller prizes is a strategy a lot of players use. When it works, as is the case with quite a number of Mass cash players in Massachusetts then it's life changing. I use a similar strategy with PP and MM hoping to hit multiple second prizes with same ticket.

Aren't they also one of the few (or only) state lotteries that sells subscriptions to out of staters? Their annual financial report should have a section that shows how much money comes from outside of MA.

Looking at the lottery report card there is a group of states that received and A+ rating and then several receiving an A. Massachusetts is among those rated A.

So I suspect it depends on what you are using to determine most successful.

Smaller states should see more out of state traffic possibly increasing their sales.

How is Massachusetts able to run one of the most successful and well managed lottery in the nation. I think, per capita, its residents play at a higher percentage than most states and win more prizes. I guess it doesn't hurt when two neighboring states' (Rhode Island and New Hampshire) residents come to your state to play as well.
