the winning number is 1 2 3 4 and I play 1243 what does that mean I win.

The others showed the math and explained a 24-way box so all I can add is it means you get paid $200 for every dollar you bet. A long long time ago the Ohio Lottery had a parimutuel pick 4 payoff. Many of the box wagers were over $1000. Worked with a guy that hit the 1243 box, took his family out to dinner on his expected winnings and found out he won a little over thirty bucks.

If you played for example boxed for 1 dollar 1243, you win, because you chose any way those numbers 1234 were drawn. If you played 1234 straight, you would win the top prize.

So if you played boxed, you'd win a lower amount if the draw was 1324-1432-1342-1243-2134-2143-3124-3142-3214-3421-4321-4231-4132-4123.

These are box plays in Pick 4, which means you select 4 digits and get paid if you match the digits in any order.

When you play 4 different digits, like 1234, there are 24 different orders in which those digits can be drawn. It's called a 24-way box and if you hit it, you generally get paid only 1/24 of the straight prize.

If you play 2 pairs, like 7766, there are 6 different orders. The 6-way box pays 1/6 of the straight prize.

cuz I look at the payout chart I get somewhat confused because if I play box for a dollar and the winning number is 1 2 3 4 and I play 1243 what does that mean I win. I'm in GA
