With live ball pick 3 and pick 4 drawings we see three or four ball sets while the lotto type games have only one ball set. The order of those draws are permutations that are converted into a combination. The drawing order has no effect on payoffs, frequencies, and hit/skips but does help to better explain repeat numbers and combinations

The number of draws needed for a 95% chance of a 5 of 36 lotto to have at least one matching draw, assuming each ball is equally likely to be picked, is

N 95 = 2.5 * sqrt(36 choose 5) = 1535 draws

See equation 7.4 in Methods for Studying Coincidences by Diaconis and Mosteller

Note N only increases as the square root of the number of classes.

Excellent question! And one that I've no idea if any of the 72 sets of duplicate five numbers were drawn in the same order or not. I tend to doubt they were. The Florida Lottery very likely has draw order information for all drawings, but if they do they don't show it on their website. Because I'm not that interested in knowing draw order I'm not going to email them and ask for it.

My take on randomness of the lottery is that it isn't as random as the purists say it should be.

Every lottery has their own definition of random using different drawing techniques so it's useless trying to compare one state lottery's version of random to any other.

Well Thrift, I agree with you up to a certain point.

It is all random, whether you play quick picks or self picks. The lottery is obviously in business to make money. Bankroll management is the most important aspect of playing the lottery ( The amount of money that you spend per drawing ). The lottery takes .50 cents of every dollar that you spend on it. It is fun to play the lottery sporadically. Good Luck

I have been wondering whether they use different ball sets for day and/or night

or if they keep all sets in rotation no matter the time

Not that it would explain your question but it is something that crossed my mind

Personally, I have shifted my funds to Lotto since it is paying more than its odds and also JTP since it is currently in rollover mode

It's long past the time for complaining that The Florida Lottery changed Fantasy5 (5/36 matrix) by adding a midday drawing, but something notable has happened that I don't understand.
