To my knowledge the best way to mitigate this is to use a true random seeding method for the PRNG, like from a hardware RNG that uses atmospheric noise, in the broadest sense.

The language that a PRNG is implemented in and the device's operating system also affect the performance of a PRNG. It's unlikely that IGT and Scientific Games use Python on the back end of the devices they sell to state lotteries, I believe the operating systems they use are proprietary, though I suspect they are usin... [ More ]

I started reading some papers on PRNGs (pseudo-random number generators) that are considered cryptographically secure. To my great surprise, these PRNG did not have maximal length cycles. Not only that, some had very short cycles! This means (to me) that if you seed such a PRNG with a seed that starts in a short cycle, you'll get a bunch of repeats, and it won't appear random!

NaCl has a cryptographically secure PRNG. NaCl is a widely used cryptographic library (for Python coders, PyNaCl (so... [ More ]
