Yeah. It seems the overall excel modem doesn't favor such multi-threading.

Hope they make part of excel functions like rendering pivots or adding to power pivot data models async. With more and more multithreading capability and the software restricting usage is not great for end users/programmers.

I know the .NET Framework added the Async/Await functionality to the VB.NET language somewhere in the .NET 4.x range. I'm surprised they haven't added it to VBA yet. Hopefully that will change soon, as asynchronous code can be really useful when doing complex combinations generation and/or calculations.

The fact is I try to programmatically lay the skips tables, pivot tables and charts for each numeric characteristic or feature.

By using formula, this could be rewritten to make use of excel formula multi-threading .

But to write custom UI or backend logic I still feel comfortable with Java - this might be solely because I am used to designing and architecturing softwares/tools using Java and J2EE.

Python will dominate the programming languages. More libraries are made available for python.

Java and C#/MS languages would still have their own market.

As a elementary/middle school kid, I took lotus 123, word perfect, visual basic computer class. Most of the time We played prince of Persia and dave.

I like VBA but it directly gets into issue when you try to multithread some vba code. Need custom dll to get threaded processing.

Infact recently I ported/rewrote part of the statistics code and the bottleneck I faced was getting things to run with single thread.

Excel calculations and few other core stuff are having multithreading support. But as a high-level language developer, applying similar ideas and write VBA code leads to single thread bottleneck.

Many people do not realize how much power Excel has in it to do complete applications. The first software I got paid to write (almost 40 years ago!) was a complete hotel reservation and room assignment application which I wrote in Lotus 1-2-3. (A spreadsheet that was around even before Excel was created.) So I learned very early on in my career that a good spreadsheet can be an extremely powerful thing with basically unlimited potential.

I also concur.

But I have to admit that I am one of those Step Writers with a limited set of looping tools.

That limits me to macros that scroll back and record selected values. For me the real power is in the formulas and selection options that the Excel Matrix can create. If-Then statements make up a good portion of the Data.

So Far all I see the Macros in my workbooks do is log history. The Formulas reduced to values and recorded in a script.

My excel outputs are from Apache POI Library.

It's bit memory hungry but it can produce great reports.

Java is my primary language. I prefer JS libraries for UI.

Python will be primary choice of programming for lot of people. Especially if someone wants to start from scratch it would be better to learn python.

VB, because it's used as the macro language in Excel. I've said for many years that Excel is the best all-around tool for lottery players, and can in fact do just about anything that a lottery player needs. You can build everything from simple formulas to complete apps using Excel, and all the front-end stuff is basically already done for you.

Python is good at working with data sets, but you can also consider the language R which has a free R studio IDE, and statistics are a core part of the language. Both are free to use, but R has a steeper learning curve. They can also be used together (there is an R library for Python).

Google App Engine is column 3 Platform as a Service

Compute Engine is basically creating your own Virtual Machine so that you can install any compilers, languages, and runtimes you want. But definitely for the more advanced developer.

App Engine you just upload an app but you are limited by the languages supported since you don't manage that aspect of it.
