Every so often, I intentionally do not play for a month or two. I want to prove to myself that I'm in control and not addicted to gambling.

As to how many people actually play on a regular basis, it's probably fewer than the article suggests. People are very aware that the lottery is a suckers bet. G5

To me, it just seems pretty obvious as to why Cali, Texas, NY and Florida have the most jackpot winners.... they're the four states with the biggest populations in America. They obviously have the biggest opportunity to sell more tickets than any other of all 50 states, and therefore they produce more jackpot winners!

But hey, whadda I know?? I'm just a poor schlep trying to make a dream into reality. (Maybe it's a pipe dream...I dunno) G5

Well based on friends and work colleagues, I would guess no more than 5% buy any ticket monthly. I spend less than $15 on average monthly and only sometimes jump in when a JP is at a record high. I have jp fatigue. Sometimes I do not play for a month or two.

Doubt you'll ever get an exact figure, but there is per-capita data and some states show it in their annual report. The report shows less than 25% play daily, weekly or monthly. IMO, if everyone could be polled, it would probably show an even smaller percentage of people are buying the majority of lottery tickets.

According to Google, the population of The United States is 333.3 million. (2022)

But that 333.3 million includes children under the age of 18 years who legally cannot buy lottery tickets. My question is what is the number of people in The USA that legally and regularly buy lottery tickets? (Both online games and scratchers)

There must be a quality estimate somewhere. I suppose Google might reveal that number, but I didn't search for it. G5
