While the odds are astronomical, the entertainment value of what if for a couple of dollars is a positive joy. Even thinking for just those few moments, If I won that,I could or I could help my family or friends or give to this charity. I could give $_____________ to this person but I ain't giving to him cause he is an ungrateful __________. I've always said The lottery is a suckers bet ....but I play it anyway knowing full well that hitting a jackpot is a incredibly hard thing to do.

Why do I do it? Because.

Because you just don't know... you could be very glad you bought your ticket even if the jackpot you won isn't a life changing amount of money. Florida Fantasy5 offers jackpots of about $120,000 (evening drawing and 120K is before taxes) but I could use about 90 grand or so.

I that buying lottery tickets and depending on winning a large jackpot is not exactly a wise investment but there is an entertainment value for 10 bucks a week too. And there many more worse things people could be spending $10 bucks a week on.

Noooo....lol. I can see 10 % in crypto but that is way too much..go for s p 500 in roth and traditional 401k plans. Guarantee you will at least be a millionaire when you want to retire. Likely much more.

When bitcoin ETFs became available finally (earlier this year), I moved 3/5 of retirement savings into bitcoin. It doubled in less than a year. It was in a Roth IRA, so no extra tax on the gain. Moved $600 into bitcoin at Paypal about 3/2 year ago. That tripled, but the gain is taxed when the bitcoin is sold (in the US)

I like your the lootery word play. 50% rake of State-run looteries is terrible for the lottery players, but good for greedy States.

Bitcoin is trading at $83,000 today. It has been a better investment than playing the lottery. I do not own any Bitcoin. I see many publicly traded companies using Bitcoin as a treasury reserve to protect their cash holdings against inflation, instead of government savings bonds, gold or silver. It might become a worldwide currency in the future though.

Look, the lottery company operates on a 50% payback rate.

Pick 3 and 4 players usually share the 50%, but MM and PB jackpot payoffs get most of that 50%. And don't get me started on the percentage, Federal, State, and Municipalities take off the top.

Back in the day it was a dollar for a dream , but now it's 10 bucks a week to find out we probably didn't even match one number.

The lottery is rigged. You win the lottery by not playing it. I feel that Todd created Lottery Post to help lottery players make smart decisions about playing the lottery and bring fairness to lottery games, hence Todd isn't a fan of Computer drawn lottery games. The lottery shouldn't take 50% of every dollar spent from a mathematical perspective.

Most I ever won was 2k on some boxed pick 4 tickets. 500 a couple times on scratchers. I stopped buying scratchers. And stopped playing pick 4 when they went computerized. I just play mm and pb now. I refuse to buy a computer draw game ticket. Play the same numbers every draw for pb and mm. Good luck though! And thanks for replying

I hit 5/6 in Ohio Lotto in the mid 1980's for about $900. As I recall, it was 6/40 and the jackpot was $250K. 2 lines for a dollar.

Playing the lottery is a form of entertainment.

Other forms of entertainment include:

1. Paying for your Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Cable subscriptions.

2. Going out for a drink or buying your drinks and having it at home.

3. Going for concerts and sports related events.

And many other examples that we can come up with.

Investing in anything, stocks and the rest does not mean that one cannot have some form of entertainment.

i prefer to invest $5 in the pocket of a jacket i wear infrequently. then when i put it on months later and check the pockets, i am delighted to find $5. think of it as investing in your future happiness.

Invest in an s p 500 fund. You can get an IRA through your bank if you do not have a 401k plan through your employer. You do not need an advanced financial education to do this. It is a simple process. You would likely have a couple of million at least after 40 years. That compounding factor is important.

It's just that their chances of leaving their troubles behind indeed are not necessarily all that bad when investing lotto money in stocks instead. I mean, maybe not with penny stocks, but with real stocks, or just ETFs.

If you really buy a lottery ticket for 5 bucks every week, and you do that for your entire working life, say, so let's say 40 years, that costs you a total of about 10000 bucks. If you invest that at an average return of 7%, you'd end up with about 53700 bucks.
