It really depends on how much iv won in this game. Most of these clerks act pretty strange as if they have a chip on their shoulder so tipping these guys would not be a thing to consider.

how much human interaction you can avoid and whether you can stay anonymous or claim via a trust/llc depends on the state where you buy the tickets. artist77 has a stickied post in the jackpot forum about which states let you claim anonymously.

I actually don't think this is a paranoid list, rather a pragmatic one.

And wow that clerk is pretty entitled. I don't know how claims for scratch-off tickets work but for a prize that big I would've done it anonymous if I can.

The clerk could have bought that ticket himself. It was there all along just waiting for someone to buy it. Then someone else did and now he's mad cause he didn't get a cut from it.

some ideas if you don't want to end up in a situation where a clerk is shaking you down for a tip:

1) buy your tickets online if your state allows it

2) in case you can't buy online, buy from a machine in a large store where the employees don't see you as a regular.

3) check your tickets yourself (eyeballs or phone app) instead of having a clerk scan it.

4) if you win a small enough prize to claim in-store, do it at a store where they don't know you. familiarity emboldens clerk... [ More ]

Maybe all the bread. The dough for croissants, bread, etc, comes in frozen. But after it's baked it could be the cause. I don't get headaches, but my sinuses go crazy. Sniffing and sneezing.

I like working in there because I was bored silly in the fuel center. There's a little c-store that sold snacks and drinks.

When I worked at the fuel station (part of a grocery store I still work at, now in the bakery) I sold lottery tickets. I never asked for a tip when cashing winning tickets. It's just sketchy. I remember this guy came in one day and bought 5 or 6 $20 scratchers. He'd buy one, scratch, have me check it, loser, buy another one, loser, one after the other. Finally hit a $50 winner. I was genuinely happy for him, told him good for you .

The clerk would definitely not get a tip if they say that. Especially if it's some rando clerk I happened to submit a claim to. What did they do? It would have to be a regular clerk I've played with consistently. Some used to remember my favorite numbers and actually remind me if I leave them out! I play mostly the three digit game. Tipping is at the discretion of the winner, but I play Keno in bars and know the barmaids. If I win $450, I leave a tip of $20. Sometimes I throw in another buck or two when I am betting so that I can get my numbers played promptly.

Bar help that isnt tipped for playing Keno numbers doesnt have an incentive to rush to get your numbers played promptly, especially when people are buying drinks where they do get tipped.

Although I've never won a jackpot and I buy tickets anywhere and everywhere, I'm not big on the idea of tipping the clerk. If you want to remain anonymous after a big jackpot win, that's just not going to happen if you tip the clerk.

When we had to go to anothger state to play Powerball I played a ticket for me and one for the clerk in a gas statin in Indiana. The next day and miles away I found out we had both won $110.

No, I would not tip the clerk for any win.

For starters, the clerks also do play the lottery and can buy a ticket from the same store they work in - who do they tip when they win anything?

Secondly, I live in a state that allows for anonymous winners, if I win any jackpot, tipping the clerk is as good as laying a trap in full view of the birds, the word gets out as fast as a bush fire. Good luck remaining anonymous after tipping the clerk and good luck with that NDA with the store clerk
