When the PB tickets start selling in the UK I am pretty sure that X Number of tickets sold in the UK for about $5.36 USD each Vs Y Number of tickets sold in the US for $2 or $3 each is all that is necessary to know.

Good news and good news.

The first good news is the pool finally won something in yesterday's Powerball. Switching to Powerball was good luck after the big Mega Millions loosing streak.

The other good news is the pool plans to buy tickets for both Mega Millions and Powerball. The pool organizer must have also received questions from other members questioning the dropping of Mega Millions.

With two games in play, this doubles our chances of winning.

When both the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots are both large enough , the decision on which game to play is based on which of the two games presents the best expected value given the current size of the jackpots. In this case, Powerball clearly presents the higher value.

Your pool can buy more tickets with PB.

The whole point of a pool is to maximize your chances of winning in exchange for winning only a portion of a multi-million dollar jackpot.

If you want to play MM, throw away the $5 on your own. In the incredibly unlikely chance you win, you get all of it for yourself. No one else in the pool could sue you for a share of the winnings if the pool only plays PB and you played MM.

Fun race to watch. If I'm betting on which one gets caught first, I'd actually lean Powerball purely on cadence - three draws a week vs two means more chances to roll AND more chances to die. Mega's been the slow burner since the format change (1 in 290.5M vs PB's 1 in 292.2M, so basically identical odds per line now), but fewer draws per week means MM jackpots age slower.

If I was to ever manage a pool, I would take contributions even when we are not playing, that way when it's time to play, we have a bigger war chest and members don't feel the strain of contributing.

I know that would be a logistical nightmare keeping track of all the contributions.

I doubt I would want to manage that unless it's a very small pool of say 10 friends.

Picked up my tickets for the week MM 4x then 5x. Maryland apparently has a promotion. I won 4 dollars worth of cash pop or whatever it's called tickets. Should have instantly threw them in the trash. Since the Powerball jackpot was just won, again it is highly unlikely it will catch up to the Mega Millions jackpot.

I'm fairly sure PB can catch up, but it will take a long time. The last time they each got past a $900 million annuity PB took just over 3 months (9/8 to 12/10) to reach 930. MM (with 2/3 as many drawings per week) took 4 1/2 months (7/1 to 11/14) to reach 980. PB took 40 rollovers to get there and MM took 39.
