If I was to ever manage a pool, I would take contributions even when we are not playing, that way when it's time to play, we have a bigger war chest and members don't feel the strain of contributing.

I know that would be a logistical nightmare keeping track of all the contributions.

I doubt I would want to manage that unless it's a very small pool of say 10 friends.

I'm fairly sure PB can catch up, but it will take a long time. The last time they each got past a $900 million annuity PB took just over 3 months (9/8 to 12/10) to reach 930. MM (with 2/3 as many drawings per week) took 4 1/2 months (7/1 to 11/14) to reach 980. PB took 40 rollovers to get there and MM took 39. I however think that if two people each had a $5 budget per week to play the lottery, and person A chooses to play MM and person B plays PB. Person A will most likely play one draw a week.

On the other hand, person B after two PB draws will have a $1 change, and they are more likely to top it up with another $1 to play all three PB draws in a week.

There's a limit to how much a jackpot can grow with multiple drawings. 3 per week vs 2 has some impact, but it's mostly on the people who are addicted to playing one set of numbers for every drawing. They don't account for much of a jackpot increase. It's the people who only play when the jackpot gets really big, or people who buy lots of QP when the jackpot gets big, that drives it up faster.

The Mega Millions jackpot was won and is at its starting point of $50 million. There was only an estimated 1.4% chance the jackpot would be won. The lotteries have way more money than all the prizes they pay out so when someone wins a jackpot it is by no means bad luck for the house. The only time so called bad luck for the house happens is when a bookie gets middled on an event they booked action on, such as when the pointspread on a sporting eventl changes enough that both the winning and losing team cover the spread.

I think what winoneday meant was that it was bad luck for the house. In the long run, the average jackpot won will equal the expected value. In a game like this, a drawing every few days with odds of 1 in 300 million, the long run could be many years.

The pool is going to wait until one of the jackpots gets much larger. We start playing when the jackpot is at least $150 million cash. It makes a difference since the plan is to split the jackpot many ways.
